II was looking for something else, and stumbled across Dubois’ county’s supplemental submission to the USDOT seeking admission into the Central Time Zone. I have not read the joint petition to which Dubois County is a party, but they’re going to have a tough time overcoming the allegations they made in the supplementary petition.
Television and radio? TV – Evansville; Radio – either Dubois County or from the Central Time Zone.
Newspapers? Either from within the County or from Evansville.
Airports? Evansville or Louisville.
Percentage of residents working outside of the community? 4% work outside of the community. 850 of them work in Central Time Zone Counties (Spencer, Gibson and Vanderburgh). About 300 work in Pike & Martin Counties (Central but requesting to switch back to Eastern.)
Economy? “The longer days during the summer heat brought on by Eastern Daylight Time could have a significant negative impact on the health of Dubois County’s poultry producers and also the health of the poultry flocks. . . .” “Dubois County’s economy is stable and this could be jeopardized should Dubois County’s petition for Central Time be denied.”
Another note: “A public forum concerning the time zone issue was conducted on September 6, 2005 to gather additional information. Approximately 3,000 residents of Dubois County (representing nearly 7.5% of the county population) expressed their opinions. 74% of the residents favored Central Time versus 26% in favor of Eastern Time.

Funny how all these facts seem to change in Dubois county now since one flip flop commissioner John Buger who was strong armed by businesses and influential people in the county to switch his vote for Eastern!I have glanced over this petition.I found it strange how things were somehow not mentions if they would support Central time.As I stated before on page 8 of this petition it states the Evansville Courier is not delivered in Martin county this is a lie!!Many here in Loogootee get this paper also no mention of Holiday World under recreation the largest amusement park in the area and supporter of Central time!!

It bears mentioning, I think, that Phillip has been very active fighting the good fight over at the USDOT docket. That’s probably important in that the USDOT seemed to rely a lot on quantity of comments supporting Eastern or Central time when making its determinations during the last go ’round. Reading the final order, it did not seem as evident that they weighed the quantities differently based on whether multiple comments came from the same source or based on whether the comment was individually written or merely a cut and paste of the Indiana Chamber’s astroturf efforts.

I agree that they hurdles, but their goofy comment about poultry isn’t one of them.
Doug says
Oh, I don’t know. They say they’re #1 in poultry production. So if they, being #1 in poultry, assert that the “extra” hour of heat will negatively affect the local poultry economy, then they’ll probably have to at least concede that they were just making shit up about the time zone’s impact on chicken health, if the poultry industry is a significant component of the local economy.
Jim says
Seems like there has been a whole lot of “making things up”.

Ah yes, “were you lying then, are you lying now, or are you simply an habitual liar?” Sir Wilfred (Charles Laughten- Witness for the Prosecution)

Oh, gimme a break! “The longer days during the summer heat brought on by Eastern Daylight Time could have a significant negative impact on the health of Dubois County’s poultry producers and also the health of the poultry flocks. . . .” … there is no more daylight on any given day than there ever has been. Changing clocks did not reset the Sun or the rotation of the earth…
I’m in Boone County, now officially on EDT. I’m also a poultry producer, and can assure you that my flock still rises at dawn and roosts at sunset – same thing they did last year. Or the year before that. Moving a mechanical hand on a wall clock, or adding bits to a digital alarm, does nothing but that: it moves the hands or the counters in a clock. Nature cheerfully ignores clocks.
I despise DST and I wish we’d never made the switch, but arguments like this do us no good whatsoever – and coming from an official body they make Hoosiers look like rubes indeed.
Be well,
Dave H.
Doug says
Just to be clear, I’m not endorsing the theory that DST matters much to the chickens; rather, I’m just pointing out that Dubois County made those statements in an official submission to the United States Government and they’ll have to live with them.

The comments by one of the Daviess county commissioners in the August 15 Washington Times Hearld is worth reading available online. No where does it mention the fact that a big INDY law firm prepared the document. He also says there will not be any new hearings and that he expects a 3 week study period by the DOT followed by a comment period which means they would have to issue a NPRM then a final decision in November whith a change to Eastern time Jan 1.I found this interesting since at the end of the joint petition it states the petitioners want this settled by no later than midnight Jan. 1.This sounds like a set up to me.My state Rep.Dave Crooks who I contacted last night says they have polling that shows 80% of people state wide want to vote on a time zone referendum. This doesn`t surprise me since this is the way democracy is supposed to work which is not having a legislature or governor shove something down your throat!!
