Governor Pence has issued Executive Orders 14-04 and 14-05 providing for cooperation with the NFL and the NCAA respectively.
The executive order concerning the NFL is in furtherance of efforts to land Super Bowl LII and provides a commitment that Indiana will supply such things public safety, fire, and street maintenance services at no cost to the NFL or the teams playing. The State will also actively protect the NFL’s intellectual property rights — or at least that’s how I read the bit about agreeing to “actively protect against unauthorized promotional activities” for a three week period surrounding the Super Bowl.
The executive order concerning the NCAA is to host, I gather, one of the Final Fours between 2017 and 2020, and it makes similar guarantees to the NCAA and teams participating in the Final Four.

Disappointing. It seems Pence is an unabashed fascist.
Paul K. Ogden says
Fascist? I don’t get that one. Actually the Indianapolis City-County Council, controlled by Democrats, did the same thing in passing a resolution to do whatever is necessary to support the NFL if it got another Super Bowl. The fact is this tendency to kow-tow to the NFL and, to a lesser degree, the NCAA, cross party lines and is done by people on the right to people on the left. It’s unfortunate and wrong, but it isn’t “fascism.”
Freedom says
It’s absolutely fascism, Paul. Coupling governmental power to business need is fascism. I’m not sure what other political philosophy could apply.
Paul K. Ogden says
Then both the Democrats and Republicans are equally fascist then.
Freedom says
I’m not sure why you would consider either party implicitly pure.
Dave Z says
“Coupling governmental power to business need.” Sounds like good ole capitalism to me. Ever heard of a tax break before? How about leasing land to business or sports teams in return for greater revenue from the taxes on the sale of tickets, food, whatever widget is being built at the plant? How about giving federal loans to create/ sustain small businesses? There are tons of examples of our governments providing and urging assistance to businesses.
C’mon Freedom. Fascism? That is pretty low for you. And that’s saying something.
Freedom says
Dave, every example you cite is outside of Capitalism. In Capitalism, government is not supposed to enter the market to determine winners and losers, as making consumer choices apart from an express consumer desire manipulates and distorts the market and does not ensure that the most desired goods are provided to consumers at the market clearing price.
Did this really need to be made explicit?
