When I signed up to run the 29th Annual Flora Hog Jog, I laughed at the idea of a free hot pork sandwich at the end of the race. So, I finished 10 kilometers at a not terrific generally, but pretty good for me 1 hour 2 minutes or thereabouts. First I got a bottle of water, then I had a watermelon wedge, and then, the pork sandwich. I have to say, it *really* hit the spot. So, I was wrong, the Carroll County Pork Producers were right.
The route is a god-foresaken, shadeless thing that often smells of manure. But that might just be my lack of fitness talking. The people of Flora, on the other hand, are gracious humans, kind enough to cheer or – in the case of the very best of them – offer up a hose or a sprinkler to wet down the runners.
It was a good time and I’d recommend the run to anyone in the general area.

Doug: Considering the heat this past Saturday and Sunday, your time is decent. I had a double header this weekend, Saturday a 4 mile at Geneseo (near the Quad Cities, that meant up at 3:30, hit the road by 4:30 am (its already light in Illinois), get there at about 7. Run at 8, and a hot 4 miles. Sunday to Mendota, IL (wow I can sleep in to 4:30). By 7:15 it was already 84 degrees, but I ran my fastest 5k in 3 years (26:17), they gave us pancakes, etc after the race. It was hot, but the dew point kept rising, so the humidity was the bigger issue. Anyway, welcome to racing in the heat. The difference from 5K to 4 miles was felt, so I know that 10K was real challenge in the heat.
