Sir Edmund Hillary, half of the first team to climb Mt. Everest, has died at the age of 88. He and his Sherpa climbing companion, Tenzing Norgay, summited Everest on May 29, 1953. Norgay died in 1986.
By all accounts, Hillary was a class act and a humble soul. Climbing Everest under any condition seems to be quite a feat. Climbing Everest for the first time with no fixed ropes, no proven trails, and 1950s mountaineering equipment is ridiculous.

I keep orgetting how young he was when he did that. I thought he was long dead; and then they mentioned last year (on the anniversary of the climb) that he was still alive.
RIP

Dude, you forgot the most important thing about the guy: Hillary Clinton was named after him.
She actually said that.
Doug says
She seriously said that? I’d be interested in a cite for that one. The Clinton have been the subject of one or two fabricated stories in the past.
She was born on October 26, 1947. Hard to believe she’d be named after an, as yet, obscure 28 year old New Zealand bee keeper and part-time mountaineer.
T says
Yeah, she said it. She said her mother always told her that’s who she was named after.
If you need a reminder, read any right wing blog today, where many are eulogizing “Guy Hillary Clinton Not Named After” today.
