So, are McCain’s efforts to paint Obama as an uppity self-centered Negro glory-hound striking home with anyone? The notion that anyone would, for example, cross to the other side of the street in fear if they saw Obama coming seems awfully ridiculous to me. Or am I missing the true thrust of McCain’s attacks?
And, what does it mean that we hear McCain talking a lot more about Obama than vice versa?
Update Some articles from a Google search for “McCain Obama uppity”:
It because neither Pratt, nor Malakar, nor Johansson have personas that are the perfect combination of no brains, no talent, and all slut.
Obama, dog whistles the ad, hitting old racists in the sweet spot, could fuck these white girls – it’s practically a Democratic tradition … JFK, Clinton, heck even Carter lusted in his heart – and we don’t want that, now, do we?
John M says
Yeah, it’s pretty ugly. I don’t know that it’s explicitly race-based. It certainly fits in with the general theme of the last few elections: any effort to paint the Democratic candidate as an out of touch elitist. Al Gore and John Kerry were white, so I can’t quite jump to the conclusion. Still, the intensity of the personal attacks is pretty remarkable: this is a man who came from humble beginnings and ended up as president of the Harvard Law Review, spurned the incredibly lucrative career that such a resume could have provided, and built a reputation and political career in a place where he had no previous roots or connections. Barack Obama is nearly 50 years old and is a damn accomplished man by any standard. Comparing him to a couple of vapid 20-something bimbos is so ridiculous and beyond the pale that if people want to read racial undertones into it, so be it. I don’t think John McCain is racist, but I think he’s a desperate man who has a mean streak even on his good days. He’s starting to make Bob Dole look like Ronald Reagan.
Of course, if we did want to figure out who is the Paris Hilton in this campaign: who was born into a prominent family and failed to live up to the accomplishments of his ancestors? Who lives a lavish lifestyle provided by money that he didn’t earn? Who spent his younger years as a well-known carouser? Who showed no inclination toward academic accomplishment?

So, are the MSM’s efforts to paint McCain as someone who would paint Obama as an uppity self-centered Negro glory-hound striking home with anyone?
Other than Doug, I mean?

Obama’s comment that his face was unlike any other on dollar bills was a racial reference, and it seemed lighthearted and amusing when I heard it orginally.Obama was speaking in a broader context of how his background is different from other presidential candidates in many different ways. McCain is the one who exploited race in a negative way. McCain is speaking to those who would cross the street out of fear of meeting any blackman.
McCain is ready to pounce on any Obama comment that he can exploit, and then say he ‘didn’t start it’. Reminds me of my teaching days..

Actually, the juxtaposition of Obama with Paris Hilton and Brittany Spears reminded me of that campaign commercial in Tennessee with the white trailer trash girl telling Harold Ford to call him.

apparently parker hasn’t been paying attention to anything the mccain campaign has said or done in the past week, as the uppity glory-hound meme is pretty much the crux of mccain’s campaign now.
Wilson46201 says
Actually, the McCain campaign had earlier produced a campaign piece with Obama’s retouched face on US currency. Barack probably was referring to that McCain sleazy photoshopping. Then the McCain attack team picked up on that remark and started hollering race card, RACE CARD, RACE CARD! Over the years I’ve learned to distrust white folk that holler “race card” against people of color. The modern GOP would probably holler “race card” against Frederick Douglass or Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr…
In Indianapolis whenever Gary Welsh sees any African-American on the street, he runs to his condo and blogs about how Barack Obama is a lying Muslim foreigner!
Joe says
Yeah, because John McCain is all about common people these days.
He & John Kerry should write a book about how to marry into money.
Joe says
Wilson, ever heard the phrase “not helping your cause?”

I see Obama is in the process of changing his opinion on off shore drilling which he called a “gimmick” earlier this week in Rolla,Missouri and has stated a few times in the past proving once again that he is a politician nothing more nothing less.He is doing this because his camapign knows how to read polls on the issue. To be fair McCain changed his position on this issue a month or two ago.
Pelosi and Reid have given the republicans a issue in a issueless year for them.
The polls are tightening but the race is Obamas to lose.
Lou says
Obama is getting defined more and more from the left who are dissatisfied with some his changes such as no oil drilling in Alaska and off coast, and by his perceived anti-Arab and too pro-Israel stances, and his opposition to reparations for slavery.
Obama may be on the liberal side, but no one will be to able accurately call him ‘extreme left’ since he is distancing himself from certain views that would guarantee him defeat. Obama is not only intellectually intelligent he is politically smart.
Parker says
And, for the bonus round:
What is the common thread among people who are ACTUALLY USING racially charged code words like ‘uppity’ with regard to Obama?
Doug says
They recognize that political dog whistles don’t work so well when they are made explicit.
Parker says
Sorry, no – but thanks for playing!
You will, however, get an autographed copy of our play-at-home version of the game, ‘Projection’!
Doug says
Hehe – I figured that wasn’t what you were looking for, but my legal writing teacher made a big deal about advising us against asking rhetorical questions since our opponents would likely be happy to answer them.

Uppity is a southern terminolgy used to label blacks who don’t know their place in society. The Republican party is greatly influenced by its southern cultural base. In all fairness, not many people can look at Obama and not judge him on race,at least initially, because race is what’s immediately obvious.
Prominent blacks are people such as J Jackson who is a stereotypic angry Black man who frightens white people. Other blacks are rock stars, basketball players or entertainers, most frivilous acting and overpaid. That’s the base of judgment for so many Americans. Obama is up against black stereotyping and the McCain campaign and surrogates know how to exploit those fears.Obama has talked about race without being heavy,in my view, but most whites cannot, and they see automatically racist intent, especially if someone points it out. Historically, race has to be ignored or the result is cultural upheavel.
It’s maybe like when I was living in France and I was told something I did or said was ‘typically american’and everyone else agreed and I didnt have a clue. You know you’re different and everyone else belongs together. It’s also demeaning because we all like to think of ourselves as independent thinkers and doers.
Many in my own family,well-meaning,good people, are afraid of Obama, and they are petrified that he may be elected president. They look to political chat to tell them their feelings are justified. They see with Obama, Jesse Jackson being president or Farakhan. There’s no rational argument against that mindset.
I hope Obama survives and gets a chance.
Mike Kole says
Survives? Hell, he’s in the lead!
Voting isn’t rational. If it were, the thing would be about substance. For every bigot who won’t vote for Obama because of race, there’s an airhead or two who will vote for him because he’s charismatic.
As for me, I’d vote for Thomas Sowell or Walter Williams in a heartbeat, if they ever ran for an office I could vote for. Give me a black president and an exclusively black Congress who are free marketeers and civil libertarians!
Jason says
Actually, when I hear the word “Uppity”, all I can think of is “Blazing Saddles” (warning, vulgar language preserved)

Lou and Wilson you are right on the money.
Johnny McSames’ campaign strategists pathetic attempt to claim Obama is playing the race card smacks of pure desperation. I was quite amused at his spokesman doing the circuit trying to spin his dollar bill comment and what in the hell Obama’s got to do with that trailer trash-with-money.
And indeed it has been my experience that the people that like to casually throw the race card term out there are, they themselves, playing the race card.
But I guess when you’ve got nothing to run on but four more years of the same BS and your campaign is desperate anything goes.
