Blue Indiana has a good post on State Representative Jackie Walorski, a particularly objectionable candidate from the Elkhart area who is spouting Palin-esque “real America” crap. Walorski is from a reliably Republican district so she probably isn’t at risk for losing her job for this sort of nonsense, but hopefully her constituents will let her know, one way or another, that she isn’t doing them any favors with this kind of hateful rhetoric that denigrates the patriotism of fellow Americans simply because they don’t share your policy views.
The heart and soul of our country isn’t marching to Obama’s drum..we are hard working, middle class Americans who believe in God, Guns and Country and aren’t impressed with the American Idol type of hype that has flooded the air.
. . .
We’re proud, hard working Americans and this is OUR country.
You know what? Go to hell. Obama supporters are proud, hard working Americans as well, and if Ms. Walorski chooses not to recognize that, she’s a big part of what’s troubling this country at the moment — people so tied up in rooting for “their team,” that they aren’t interested in acknowledging the legitimacy (if not necessarily the superiority) of competing points of view.

As prejudiced real Hoosiers in Lafayette or Shelbyville might say: what sort of name is “Walorski”, anyways?

Her picture fits the story –

I love saying things like this, but someday I will be correct. Jackie Walorski will be Becky Skillman’s lietentant governor running mate in 2012. You heard it here first!!

If she wants to claim ownership of the country, I’d ask to see the receipt.
Sally says
So hard working they embrace the socialistic views that have crashed other nations. Take from the rich… and give to the poor… punish the job creating business…sure makes complete sense to me…
Shelly says
T, that is perfect. I may have to steal it from you.
I used to live in Owen County, which is not exactly a hotbed of progressiveness. When stopping for gas one morning, an older gentleman walked over to my car, looked at my pinkocommie bumper stickers, and told me to move to Canada, if I hate America so much. Huh? I love America, which is why I’m so upset at what this country has been dragged through in the past 8 years. And, I’m sick to death at people telling me that I’m unamerican for daring to have an opinion that differs from theirs.

Masson 4 Gov! – Doug, you’re a breath of fresh air in a stale, smoke filled room. Let ‘er rip!
lemming says
Doug, has your mom been giving you career advice again? :-)
This sort of narrow-minded thinking has been with us as a nation from the beginning. Alas, I don’t anticipate it ending any time soon. “It feels so right, it can’t be wrong…”
Doug says
Well, o.k., Sally, since you were kind enough to volunteer an example.
If you wanted to, you could have said something like, “You know what? I disagree with Obama’s proposed tax policy. I believe that concentrated pools of wealth are very healthy for the economy and, in any case, only occur through hard work and creativity.”
Instead, you have to impugn the motives of Obama and his supporters with “EEK! SOCIALISM!” and essentially imply that everyone who supports such policies are lazy, shiftless bastards who want to “punish” businesses. It’s just not true. Furthermore, people like you who don’t or choose not to recognize that differences of opinion might be honest ones are a corrosive influence on the public discourse.
Paddy says
This happens on both sides of any given issue. From the cries of “un-american” and “socialist” to the cries of “uneducated” and “racist” both sides particpate in this type of rhetoric. Doesn’t make it right, and both sides of the coin contribute to the problms this country has at the moment.
Doug says
Be careful of false equivalencies here, though. If you see it on either side, by all means call it out, but don’t assume that if it happens once on one side and a million times on the other side, it’s all the same.
(Of course, another problem is pretending there are just two sides to any given issue.)
Paddy says
1. No false equivalencies here, neither side comes out of this smelling like roses.
2. No need to “call it out” it is simpler to ignore it as the idiocy that it is. If I recognize the offending action, I legitamize it and admit that it has power.
3. Of course there are never only 2 sides, It would have been more properly stated as all sides of an issue.
Parker says
Doug –
Remember, there are two kinds of people.
Those who believe there are two kinds of people, and those who don’t.
[BTW, it seems a little off to complain about the tone of a comment when your post directs someone to head for the eternal fire – just sayin’, is all…]
Doug says
I don’t think so. If she’d been plainly stating a policy agreement, sure, I would’ve been out of line telling her where to go. But, it’s kind of a prisoner’s dilemma. If you let them attack your character without punching back sharply, you’re going to lose.
T says
Sally–
We’ve had this discussion here before. But in the past my taxes were a bit higher, and the budget was balanced. Now the rate’s a bit lower, and it pays off only part of the tab. I would pay more if I thought it would settle the bill, rather than defering it until later, with interest.
The average Obama supporter is as hard working as the average McCain supporter. The people I work with on canvassing are all professionals. I take after my father and work 27 out of 30 days. When I hear that bullshit from the people waiting at Palin rallies, where they yell “Get a job!” at the Obama supporters, I either want to laugh at their ignorance or scream about it.
The Right thinks they have cornered the market on patriotism and work ethic. It’s just another example of how out of touch they are. Due to those beliefs, they just won’t be able to understand tomorrow how the election could have possibly gone the way it likely will go. They’ll believe they lost to hordes of anti-American jobless welfare queens. Let the bewilderment begin.
T says
I also had no idea that the difference between socialism and capitalism is a few percentage points of tax on the highest bracket.
Craig says
John McCain is against socialism and that’s why he’s calling making a it a central argument in his campaign to call for an end to farm subsidies…oh wait, he’s not doing that at all.
Nevermind
Hoosier 1st says
Gosh, Doug, just how do you feel about Ms Walorski? HEHE..
The woman needs to loosen that helmet hair of hers and realize that she’s not the arbiter of all that is holy and real in America. Just as she doesn’t want ME to determine her life, neither do we need HER to do it for the rest of us.
Nate says
Thank you for this post. I am so tired of listening to people tell me how tough Obama will be on business. My father just closed the Auto Garage that was started by my grandfather almost 45 years ago. He had never seen business so bad. Places like our hometown are dying because people like Walorski push bs issues like gays and guns. During my days on the House staff she was the least respected member and that is saying something!
Pila says
@Sally: Do you have any facts or actual policy positions of Barack Obama to support your claims? By the way, I mean something other than “information” from McCain/Palin flyers, commercials, and rallies, right-wing media, etc.
chuckcentral says
How’s your Kool-aide, Sally?
Chris Spangle says
I agree with you Masson. People from the city, and urban areas are as American as people from the country. It’s irritating the GOP positions themselves as the best patriots and Christians.
