Senator Bray’s Senate Bill 35 would expand the Court of Appeals by three judges. There is what seems to be a legal fiction of sorts that these judges will be from the “Sixth District” which consists of the entire state of Indiana — the same district as the 4th & 5th “districts.” Districts 1 – 3 consist of discreet geographic areas from which appellate judges must be selected. The 4th – 6th districts have one judge each from the 1st – 3rd districts.
Presumably expanded case load is the reason for the additional judges. I’m certainly doing my part, having been involved in about four matters before the Indiana Court of Appeals last year when I hadn’t been involved in any during the years 2005 and 2006.
