$48,420,000,000 for Education. I might agree with every penny of that, but NOTHING of that will help the economy this year, and I doubt it will have any impact next year. Why the hell is it in this bill?
Get the things done in a hurry (since it is an emergency & we’re not supposed to argue about it, right?) that will make an impact this year first. Then go on and pass an education bill that we have time to look at.
Agree with statements above—sadly still seems like a lot of “favorite projects” (more commonly known as “Pork”) in the bill that do not seem directly related to anything that could be called “economic stimulus”.
The bill can not be broken up and must be “hurried” because the longer it’out there the more people learn about all the PORK in it. Such as golf carts,Speaker Pelosi’s $30 million study and conservation of MARSH MICE for her San Fran district. The list is endless. The bill has a lot of earmarks and pork even if lawmakers do not want to call it that. What happened to a new kind politics that was promised this whole Turkey was hurried and pushed through, conferees met behind closed doors another broken promise. Is this the way it’s usually done. Yes! This is exactly what the republicans did when they were in control nothing has changed.
Some of the things in the bill are good. Some of the spending is good but should have gone through regular appropriations. It didn’t because lawmakers saw a chance to push though a bunch of goodies they wanted. How is millions of $ for the NEA going to stimulate the economy?
Well this junk just passed with no republican support and 7 democrats also against. Hope my congressman Brad Ellsworth voted NO again. We also had to hurry because president Obama like president Bush said the sky will fall if we don’t do this right away. Therefore most lawmakers didn’t get to read this junk.
After voting 407-2 in the House to include E-VERIFY be a requirement for any jobs created by the STIMULUS Harry Reid would not allow a bi-partisan amendment in the senate by Nelson(D) and Sessions(R) to be voted on and while behind closed doors this requirement was stripped out. It is estimated that because of this up to 300,00 illegal immigrants will gain jobs over american citizens. E-VERIFY is over 99% effective in weeding out illegal workers. It’s funny we always hear democrats saying “we need to turn off the jobs magnet for illegals and make sure businesses hire legal workers” I heard this from candidate Obama many times. So what do they do kill the program. Block grants in this legislation will also insure groups like ACORN which is under suspicion for voter fraud will recieve money from this TURKEY.
Many folks in the rustbelt will also be very disappointed that the “buy american” clause was watered down to complete uselessness. Candidate Obama promised different. What the language now says is buy american will be the case if it doesn’t violate WTO(world trade orginization) policy which many times it will. This is the same thing the Bush adm did so no change there. The Europenas and other nations violate WTO all the time but the Chamber and business interests want to make sure no protectionism exists so they got their way as ususal like the last Adm. Nice to see politics coming into play with the census. Moving it to the white house would be like Karl Rove taking control of the census when Bush was president. No critisim will be heard though I’m sure from more liberal democrats.
Make no mistake though passing this legislation is a BIG WIN for president Obama. He better hope it works. However so far whether failed and tax cheating cabinet appts,Daschle,Geithner,Kilefer etc, watering buy american down,or killing E-Veify this is not change I can believ in. And what the hell happened to NO LOBBYISITS in the new adm. There are 17 and counting so far. It does little good to mak a “no lobbyist” rule then simply grant a waiver for it.
I take issue with senator Schumer saying americans don’t care about these millions of $ in porky amendments I do. To me a conservative democrat who calls it like I see it this just looks to be politics as usual to me. To republicans I say feel free to disagree with the STIMULS and highlight the bad things in it but don’t whine about being shut out of the process you folks did the same thing when you controlled the White House,House, and Senate.. I’ll tell you the same thing I told lberal democrats that whined about the appointing of conservative Supreme Court justices WIN THE ELECTION and you can have more control over the process!
Do you wonder why both Republicans and Democrats are both wondering why their parties left them and are joining the Libertarian Party.
There’s a meet up in Indianapolis on Monday evening at the Oak and Barrel. If you’re pissed at what these two corrupt parties are doing to OUR country, you should come.
We have a huge turn out at every After Hours meet up!
Ellsworth voted yes to the STIMULUS. I guess the ride this week on AIR FORCE ONE to Elkhart sold him. I really like the congressman but will have to think seriously in the future about supporting him. He has a national debt counter on his homepage I wonder what he thinkds this garbage will do to it. Again some of the bill was good but a lot was garbage and this should have been a clean bill of that kind of junk.
The tax cuts, for example, are nonsense in a stimulus bill. On the other hand, they passed an AMT fix which wasn’t stimulus, but was something that had to be done one way or another.

How do you figure?

Yeah, but why was it in this huge thing?
Extending that line of thought, Congress could just pass one bill a year – which would be great, if you assume they could get everything in it right…
Does my heart good to see some “disbelief” in the porkulus programs coming from the Democrats.
I’m waiting for the realization to set in that the ones holding the bag on this trillion or so, and will get hurt the most are gonna be none other than the children of the “middle class”. The wealthy can afford that bill when it comes due, and the poor sure as hell ain’t gonna pay anything for it, so guess who does?
That would be us, the largest group of taxpayers of course, the “middle class”.

ProPublica is doing nice work!
My question on this – why does the stimulus have to be one big bill?
Can’t they pass something like $100 billion of what is most urgent and most likely to be effective?
And then discuss other things where the money won’t be spent this year (or even next year)?
I’d have more trust if our congressional delegation was voting on something it was at least physically possible to review in time.
I can think of reasons for this bundling – the trouble is, I can’t think of any reasons I would agree with…
