In the quest to eradicate drunk driving, the most frequent approach is to focus on reducing the drinking part of the equation. Muncie tavern owners, who obviously have an interest in keeping the drinking side of things robust, are apparently taking measures to reduce the need for driving.
Just as Indiana State Police and other local enforcement begin a Labor Day crackdown on intoxicated driving, a group of Delaware County bar owners will pay a local taxi service to provide home-to-bar, bar-to-bar and bar-to-home transportation every day until the 3 a.m. closing time. That service begins today.
PDQ Taxi owners Brad and Karen Luttrell had proposed the free-ride program, to be subsidized by the Delaware County Licensed Beverage Association.
Drunk driving tends to go hand-in-hand with a subpar public transit system. Offering free rides from bars is a good idea if the tavern owners and taxi or shuttle services can make profitable. But I suspect it only works where most of your patrons are coming from a relatively limited geographic donut — not so close that they were just going to walk in the first place and not so far as to make the amount of driving by the taxi unreasonable.

One thing that makes drunk cabbing better than drunk public transportation is telling the cabbie where home is. Back in my early 20’s, I was in New York, staying in Queens, but hitting the clubs in Manhattan. Took the train back to Queens with a friend. Both of us fell asleep. The train kept going. Woke up after it had made the turn and got us 3/4 the way back to where we came from.

i will NEVER use pdq again. i almost lost my job cause of them. they made me late and i was wrote up for it. when i called in to talk about this to the owners they were out of town. and evertime i have called since they are out of town. how do you run a company if your never here? and you cant talk to the manager she is rude and sides with the drivers. they smoke in the vehicles. i am a smoker too but it says on the vehicles NO SMOKING. so why dont the drivers have to follow this rule? i was told by a driver that the owners said they didnt care if they or passengers smoked! the driver bragged that the owners told them they could smoke in the office as well! what kind of owners are these? they let their drivers do what ever and their never here to deal with things. i will stick with Tonys and pay for my rides. i dont need free rides @ the price of dealing with the drivers and staff. how are the rides free when i hear ppl complain all the time how the drivers charge them, must be nice to double charge ppl and get by with it. how do these ppl sleep @ night? the owners need to come back in town and take care of BUSINESS.
