Good has defeated evil, Frodo has dropped the Ring in the Cracks of Doom, Aragorn has claimed his crown, and none of it would have been possible if Sauron hadn’t stupidly decided to go for it on 4th & 2 at his own 28 instead of punting.
And Collinsworth is still a tool. The last Sunday night game, Collinsworth was talking about how Manning couldn’t be in the same conversation with Marino in terms of great quarterbacks until Manning had won at least another Super Bowl. This time he was running his mouth about how the Colts had trouble playing high caliber teams.
For those who didn’t watch the game, the Colts came back from a big hole against the Patriots. They were down 17 points in the 4th quarter (31 – 14). They pulled within 6 and kicked the ball to the Patriots and then stopped them, leaving them with a 4th & 2 on their own 28 yard line with about 2 minutes to go. Clearly you punt this one. But Bill Belichick is an arrogant jackass and decided to go for it and failed, turning it over on downs at the 29. Manning had to kill clock on his way to a Reggie Wayne touchdown pass with 13 seconds left. Colts win 35 to 34 in their second or third greatest comeback ever. (First is clearly the AFC Championship game following the 2006 season. Vying for second is the Tampa Bay game in 2003).
So, the Colts go to 9-0, but still have some tough work to do in terms of teams they play. But, with seven games left, they have a four game lead over the rest of their division and a two game lead over Cincinnati. The complexion of the rest of the season looks a lot different with a win tonight than it would have with a loss.

I definately heard Collinsworth say, when he was discussing the relative merits of Manning and Brady, “Clearly, these are the two greatest quarterbacks OF ALL TIME.”
A definate tool.

Collinsworth’s so-called charm is wearing thin. I hardly watch football anymore, but couldn’t miss this game. What a finish!

Last week, a missed field goal that was a sure thing to tie the game and send it into overtime. This week, an unlikely call from a coach who does not make unlikely calls, letting the colts have a chance to score.
Who is profiting from this? Are the bookies setting the outcome of the games or is this a gift from god?
Did any of the vendors dare step up and sell rodent turds on a stick?
Why are not these football heroes fighting for our freedom instead of sapping millions from our poverty stricken neighborhoods?
Just a little rain, or as some see it, angels tears, on your parade. :)

The summary I read of the game looked like a total nail-biter (and I’m not into football).
On another note… Doug, is there anything you can do about the @#$!@#$ “Share This” widget at the end of each article? I don’t know if it is Windows 7, IE 8, or just my computer, but if I accidentally brush my mouse over it, a large box pops up that WILL NOT CLOSE. I have to go to another page and come back to what I was reading to get rid of it.

Contrast Belidick’s decision with the one the Colts made a minute or so earlier, when they kicked deep rather than trying an onside kick.

Way to go Colts. Bill Belichick’s ego continues to amaze!!!!!!!!

Collinsworth has a terminal case of Jeff Greenfield Disease. He was a breath of fresh air when he came on the scene, was overpraised for it, and appears to’ve swallowed it whole, which resulted, oddly, in him becoming the very same sort of idiotic CW spouting careerist he was celebrated for not being. (Did he really say that Manning had to win another Ring to be considered in Marino’s league? To match Dan the Man’s, lessee, what was it? Oh, yeah, zero.)
Not to mention that no one with any sense should ever take a seat on one of those studio panels, which have already turned Rich Eisen into a drooling idiot, and threaten to do the same to Dan Patrick.

When was Collinsworth praised? I have always wanted to change the channel when I heard his voice.
While we bitching about him, there was one moment that was FAR more stupid than the others that I heard. He was watching as Pats #77 chased away one of our defenders from getting a sack on Brady. Now, Brady was standing still this whole time while his boy defended him, waiting to get a clear throw.
Rather than praise #77 for doing an outstanding job defending his QB, Collinsworth went on and ON about how great Brady does avoiding sacks. I’d be pissed even if I were a Patriots fan!

@ Jason: I think that Chris Collinsworth was praised when he first started doing football commentary, but that was so long ago, that I can’t provide links to any sources that praised him. I think that people liked him because of his looks and “aw shucks,” regular guy demeanor. What seemed refreshing and honest years ago is more of a tired schtick now.
@ Doug: I have the same problem as Brenda. Perhaps it is a browser issue, but if the “Share This” option were moved away from the comments link, it would be nice. It is very easy to open the widget by accident, and then it won’t close.

There are some good links to today’s press conferences with Jim Caldwell and Bill Belichick’s press conferences at the Colts and Patriots websites. Belichick took responsibility for last night’s loss which was good. Caldwell stressed the need to keep focused, after all it was Peyton Manning vs. Tom Brady as well as the rivalry (thanks, Colts for evening the score) between the Colts and the Patriots. I have a visceral distate for Belichick as a coach. I have nothing personal against Belichick perhaps that’s just his coaching style but am glad the Colts won. I keep thinking back to two years ago when the Colts came from behind, this is truly a game for the ages, granted this wasn’t a playoff game and there are 7 games to go for the Colts. A client of ours has access to one of the press boxes at Lucas Oil Stadium and one of the guys I work with took his son up to Indy last night for the game and saw one hell of a game. With the drive back to Louisville they didn’t get home until about 2:00 a.m. this morning and were wiped out today after not getting much sleep. It was worth it though, didn’t get much work done this morning, it was interesting to hear their perspective on the game. I wish I hadn’t gone to bed at the end of the 3rd quarter!
