Yes, I should be working, but I had a trial scheduled for today that settled at the last minute, so I’m having trouble re-focusing my attention. I came across a post talking about how to get and play old DOS games, so I figured cool, old computer games would be a good thread.
My all-time favorite was probably Sid Meier’s Pirates! In high school, T and I spent endless hours playing this game, eating Pizza King Royal Feasts, and drinking cokes. Basically, you sailed around the Spanish Main plundering cities, finding buried treasure, and advancing your career by playing the Spanish, Dutch, English, and French against each other. To this day, my knowledge of Caribbean geography is heavily influenced by this game, and I probably think of places by names that are 400 years out of date.
Next in line was probably Ultima IV: Quest of the Avatar. This was a morality tale wrapped in a fantasy game. The goal was to learn about and improve your character in the 8 virtues (honesty, compassion, valor, justice, honor, spirituality, and humility) and their relationship to the three principles of Truth, Love, and Courage while killing monsters and getting loot.
Other notables for me: Civilization, Zork, , Raid on Bungeling Bay, Leaderboard Golf, Leisure Suit Larry, Seven Cities of Gold, Montezuma’s Revenge, and Full Throttle.

What about King’s Quest? and Rogue?
Amy says
And when I finished the first King’s Quest, I didn’t have youtube videos or Internet cheats to help me find the answers. It was all SKILL!

I played a lot of Rogue. Mmm, mangoes! I never had King’s Quest though.

Civilization V just came out, and should I download it, may single-handedly keep me from graduating on time.
I had the original Civ on my first computer — a 286 classic with no mouse. I dedicated a lot of hours to that game, and just about every version since.
Doug says
I want to play Civ V, but it seems like playing any Civilization game has always required me to put aside something like 48 consecutive hours at a stretch.

Sailing east sucked. Otherwise, I miss that old game.

Kings Quest for the PCjr was my first computer game. Was able to play it and KQ2 on it, but I didn’t have the 384k of RAM required for Kings Quest 3 until I got my 286 12mhx PC with 4 MB of RAM!
I have fond (now) memories of being stuck on the LAST thing in KQ2, all I had to do was type the word “home”, as it was on the back of the amulet. However, typing “say home” and “speak home” did NOT work, so it took months (I think 3 months) until I just tried “home” by itself.
Doug, I had the same problem with Civilization. That is, until I found this helpful guide on how to stop playing: http://www.snapbuzz.com/image/16222/

Oh, and my own favorite PC game was Wing Commander 2. It is the game that made me go into computers, because you had to know a good deal about DOS to get the 624k out of 640k free to play the game.
Doug says
See, I went the other way. I ended up pirating long distance calls so I could dial up bulletin board systems in other cities to, among other things, download games. When the police took my C-64 to the evidence room, that put a damper on my computer pursuits for awhile, but really got the old legal juices flowing.

Wow, dude. Worst I did was hack into BBS on someone else’s account for porn and to sabotage their Trade Wars account.
