Thanks to Paul for the heads up. The Associate Press is reporting that Daviess County will request Central time.
Central time would keep southwestern Indiana’s Daviess County in sync with Evansville when the state goes to daylight-saving time next spring, commissioners said Monday when they decided to send the request.
Commissioner Tony Wichman said local constituents he spoke to favored Central time.
“It seems to be an overwhelming majority,” said Steve Myers, a commissioner who said only three of 23 people who called him favored Eastern time.
Meanwhile, the South Bend Tribune is reporting that the St. Joseph County Council has adopted a resolution 5-2 supporting Central Time. The article says that the resolution is “expected to trigger” a request to INDOT for central time. I don’t believe that the County Commissioners have taken a formal vote on the issue, but I may have missed that. My recollection is that the Commissioners would be the ones who would have to submit the request, but I don’t have time at the moment to research that issue. I don’t necessarily recall anything that would require the Commissioners to take a public vote on the issue. Possibly, they could rely on the Council’s instructions; though it would certainly be much cleaner if the Commissioners took a formal vote and acted accordingly.
The Census office has a great Indiana County map that allows you to get census information on a county-by-county basis. (Daviess County is 431 square miles and has a population of 30,047 with a median household income of $34,064 — just in case you were wondering. And St. Joseph County is 457 square miles and has a population of 266,348 with a median household income of $40,420.)
