John Hostettler (Wingnut-Evansville) is against a couple’s right to get a divorce simply because they ask for it. According to a story in the Courier Press, Hostettler “told area clergy that divorce on demand is as dangerous as gay marriage, and pastors’ actions will be key to strengthening all Indiana families.” Coming from me, that wouldn’t mean much since I’m not really scared of gay marriage. But from him, pretty strong words given how panicky Rep. Hostettler is to the notion of gay marriage.
Hostettler added:
“The picture of marriage is the picture of Christian salvation,” said Hostettler, who describes his elected office as a ministry. “Any diminishing of that notion – whether homosexual marriage or any other degradation of marriage – is something we must fight in public policy.”
Public policy, he added, that is rooted in Scriptural truth.
My understanding is that the Church asserted dominion over the institution of marriage about 500 years ago. I’m sure someone has written about it, but I would be interested in knowing how society functioned or how Christians related to God during the first 3/4 of Christianity’s history.
