I don’t get the point of HB 1109 introduced by Rep. Gutwein. It requires the BMV to put the status of the driver as a veteran on the back of the person’s driver’s license or identification card if requested by the veteran and if sufficient proof is provided.
I guess my confusion stems from my inability to see how notation of the veteran status: a) serves the functions of a driver’s license or identification card; and b) does so in a way that is unique to veterans as opposed to other past professional or civic experience.

Sounds like a good way for vets to get out of traffic tickets.
Brenda H says
I wonder if there are there circumstances where vets are routinely asked for both ID and proof of their vet status such that putting it on the DL would reduce the paperwork they need to carry.

the probable reason is that more and more businesses are providing discounts to veterans. and, before any one says that is unfair…the military is still hiring and you are welcome to join.

You are correct, sir. Go to home depot and vets get a discount if they hzve proof of veteran status.
Landon says
I honestly think that it’s a good idea. Some veterans don’t want to have to in-process with the VA just to get an ID card. Verification of veteran status is so much easier when it is on a state issued ID.

I am a Vet. and I think this is a great idea. We have so many that are homeless and I believe this would help them if they got into an accident. I go to the VA and if anything were to happen to me this is where I would want them to take me. I also agree with Hal you want to be a part of this sign up today. They are still looking for good men and women who would love to serve their country. I did and I would do it again in a heart beat.

Great idea. Too many abusers out there on free meal day claiming to be veterans, when they are just bumbs wannabees looking for a free ride. Shameless wonders. I am a veteran. I find it crazy that this country has no identification for veterans to carry on their person. Our nation should allow its veterans to be able to provide proof of service via a document that is widely accepted such as a drivers license. And if you think all cops give veterans a free ride on tickets, think again. I had a Vietnamese cop give me a 150 dollar fine for not wearing my seatbelt and I had Marine Corps veterans license plates.
Kim Villere says
First of all, Ben C., shame on you.
Secondly, there have been many times that I have been asked to provide documentation of my status as a US Army Veteran. Having this designation on my drivers license is much simpler than carrying around my DD214.
David Pennell says
Yes Kim
Iam having trouble with Lowes. The don’t honor it but if you want to bring in you DD214 it’s alright.
David Pennell says
I have this on my drivers license but LOWES DOES NOT reconize this. They say it’s not official, so it tells me that they do not reconize the BMV as an offical branch of the state of Indiana. Policy comes before law. The did say it,s alright to bring in your DD214. Mine is in a safe deposit box and to shrink it would be hard to read.
Daniel Scott says
As a vet, this would help out a big deal. The only thing people accept for military service when you get out is a DD-214 form, which is a couple of pages and has everything an identity theft would need, included social security number. If I can bring in the DD-214 once and get this on my license it would make things much easier having the things I need to prove an honorable discharge allready on an ID that I carry around with me everywhere. Also would be a good way to prove your service in a bar
