Jim Burdsall provided me with this map (pdf) of the “natural” time zones — presuming 24 one hour time zones, 15 degrees per zone. Under these basica geometric guidelines, the natural Eastern/Central border at 82.5 degrees west longitude runs just east of Columbus, Ohio — rougly through Mansfield, Ohio. Indianapolis is 589 miles from the meridian for the Eastern Time Zone at 75 degrees west longitude. By contrast, it is 200 miles from the meridian for the Central Time Zone at 90 degrees west longitude.
