Submissions to the USDOT docket - A Citizen's Guide to Indiana

Some submissions to the USDOT time zone docket I found interesting:

The Mayor of the City of Portage (pdf) notes the interconnectedness of Lake, Porter, LaPorte and St. Joseph Counties and, in particular, notes transportation concerns such as the South Shore commuter line, the South Bend regional airport, to which the South Shore is apparently linked directly, and Indiana’s International Port in Portage.

Concerns from Sinai Synagogue in South Bend about the difficulties created by Eastern Daylight Time for Jewish families trying to observe Jewish Holidays. In particular, the Jewish observance of the Sabbath “begins with sundown on Friday eve and concludes Saturday night after darkness
descends.” This means that in the summer on Eastern Daylight Time, observance can’t begin until 9 to 9:30; very difficult to do with children. The writer notes that 4:30 sunsets under Central Standard Time poses its own set of difficulties, but in the final analysis, not as burdensome as EDT.
