Today is Organization Day for the Indiana General Assembly. It is largely ceremonial in nature. To be honest, I don’t know what all they do during organization day. I assume they vote to approve the House and Senate Rules and maybe confirm leadership positions and set legislative deadlines. But, then again, I suppose all of that may be biannual, done only when a new General Assembly convenes.
In any case, it didn’t mean much from a staff perspective when I worked at Legislative Services. It looked like nothing so much as the first day of school. All the legislators got together, were happy to see each other again, and wondered what they did over the summer. Soon thereafter, however, old rivalries would be remembered, and it was back to the old grind.
In any case, they’ll have a little extra to deal with today. State employees are apparently expected to rally around the State House and protest the privatization of state jobs.
