The AP is reporting that SB 89 is stalled for the time being. This is the bill that started as an attempt to require doctors who performed abortions to have admitting privileges at a local hospital. The pretext for this was that it was necessary to preserve women’s health.
Now the hold up is a provision put in by House Democrats that included a screening program for breast and cervical cancer. Republicans are apparently complaining about the expense and propriety of the screening provision.
I’m not going to research this, but I can pretty much guarantee that undetected breast and cervical cancer are greater threats to women’s health than complications from abortions that would be prevented by requiring a doctor to have admitting privileges at a local hospital. Looks like women’s health isn’t really that strong a motivator after all.
