James Yee, a veteran and former Army Chaplain, gave a speech at Ball State describing abuses he suffered when he was arrested by the military.
Former Army chaplain and West Point graduate James J. Yee was treated like the Taliban and Al-Qaida prisoners he counseled at Guantanamo Bay after being accused of spying and espionage.
“I was arrested in secret and locked for 76 days in solitary confinement,” said Yee, a third generation Chinese-American who converted to Islam. “What happened was a gross miscarriage of justice.”
On his way to military prison, Yee wore blackout goggles, ear muffs and was shackled, like those detained at the Guantanamo prison camp that bordered on torture.
Yee’s conversion to Islam, his experience in the military, and his later arrest with all charges dropped by the federal government held a crowd of more than 150 students and others at Ball State University for more than a hour Thursday night.
