Today we’re off of Daylight ‘Saving’ Time and back on “Standard” time. The names are complete misnomers in that no daylight is saved, in fact the most recent study shows we use more energy on daylight time than on standard time. And, of course, “standard” is kind of silly since it’s the time we’re on for only about 4 months per year.
Anyway, just a friendly reminder to set your clocks back an hour; grumble if your kids get up based on the earth’s relationship to the sun rather than the numbers on the clock; and, I suppose, consider casting a vote against Gov. Daniels if you find the process annoying and/or unnecessary.
Jason says
Back on “Standard” time, yet the clock is still an hour out of sync with the sun. Imagine that.
I’d consider casting a vote for JLT if she said something about moving us to Central Standard Time. However, since she has not, I’ll be looking at other issues.
Chris says
I got to goto a meeting 2hours early this morning thanks to the MANDATORY time change and being in the central time zone. Thanks again moron Mitch
Robert says
JLT all the way. I think DST will be repealed. Hopefully, this will be the last time we have to change the clocks by remaining on CDT\EST year-round. Being on Central time permanently would be nice but I think the compromise would be the best solution. Good riddance Mitch.

I love Eastern time and DST. Love it. Love the late, late sunsets in June and July. If anything, if I were in charge of it, I’d stay on DST year-round to avoid the dreary 5pm sunsets of December and January.
Totally depressing to be in the northern Chicago suburbs or southern Wisconsin in the Winter months on Central time, with their 4pm sunsets.

Amazingly enough, some media person was just reporting that DST had become a “non-issue” in Indiana.
Not with you terriers continuing to chew the sock. ;)
Mike Kole says
It should be a non-issue, so long as the economy is what it is. Like living Patron Saint Bill Clinton famously said…
Lou says
No Hoosier politician made TZ or DST an issue for this election,so time must be a dead end issue politically,at least for now.

I’m with Mike on this one. I said the only way I would vote for Mitch was if he passed DST. I love the late daylight in the summer. More time to play.
One of the best things about visiting my wife’s relatives in North Dakota in the summer was the daylight that stayed until 10pm.
Rev. AJB says
I’m with you on why it is called standard time when we are on DST from the second Sunday in March until the first Sunday in November.
Call it what it is…Retarded Time;-)
BTW I moved away from “God’s Time” in 1992 and have been changing clocks ever since then. It hasn’t gotten any easier accepting this MAN-MADE modification of time. For one thing, I now have four grumpy kids because we kept them up until their regular bedtime accoring to the clock; but then they woke up when their bodies told them to-which was an hour too early.
When I run for president my one promise will be to keep everyone on their dst time (after moving Indiana back to CST) abnd then leaving the clocks alone!
Rev. AJB says
I meant to move Indiana to permanent CDT-sorry!
Robert says
No worries Rev. you are forgiven and year round CDT would be the best solution.
Mike, year round EDT would not work because the sun would be rising after 900h in Dec. and Jan. and that would be extremely depressing. The current 800h sunrises at those times are depressing as it is and that is why being on Central time would be much better with earlier sunrises happening at 700h, just like it is in Chicago.
Boston, St. Paul, and New York don’t seem to be having a problem with sunsets at 1615h and 1630h respectively.
Daron, summer vacations with relatives in Boston and Seattle are terrific with the sunrises coming at 500h.

Interestingly enough it has been said media “person” that has gained financially by Daniels’ force fed Eastern Daylight Time.
chuckcentral says
AJB, I would be happy with Federal legislation that would disallow states from observing time zones outside their geographical boundaries.
Mike Kole says
God’s time? The railroads invented standard time and time zones. Prior to their work to implement a standard, all cities and towns had their own time. That worked fine when cities and towns were relatively isolated. Alas, it isn’t 1820 anymore.
Robert- I find waking before 9am ungodly and inhumane, but that’s just me. This is really what this comes down to, though: personal preference. Those interested in being in synch with the largest population in the USA gravitate towards Eastern and DST. Those who want their own thing for their own reasons…
varangianguard says
Simple enough solution. Become your own boss and henceforth refuse to pay attention to any sort of time keeping device.
If you really think that time is a tyranny, then overthrow the tyrant and throw out (or turn off) all your timepieces.
Otherwise, notwithstanding all the complaining, you are all just willing pawns of the almighty clock.

This is precisely the wrong argument from the get go. Using this theory you could place Illinois in the Eastern time zone. Heck, you could have some lobbyist pleasing governor with friends at the DOT place California in the Eastern time zone.
No. Time zones are/should be determined by geography.Period. If not, don’t call them time zones. Eastern time for Indiana is illegitimate. As I’ve stated before, Indiana is the only state that observes a time zone outside its geographical boundary.
