Lawgeekgurl has a post I really enjoyed entitled everything old is new again! let’s bring the shame back to unwed motherhood! The primary focus of the post is a Virginia bill that looks remarkably similar to the wrong-headed proposal that Sen. Miller floated in her Health Finance Committee which would have prohibited single women, among others, from receiving reproductive assistance.
The post explains that when you see a whack-job piece of legislation, often times, it has been copied by something proposed or adopted in other states. My favorite part of the post, however, was the parenthetical that explained other possibilities:
(Unless it’s a pet issue of a single legislator yes, I’m looking at YOU Sen. Meeks and your annual crusade to force the Professional Licensing Board to license hypnotists; what was UP with that? The other alternative is that it’s a favor for a constituent and clearly is tailor made for one specific situation and yes I’m looking at YOU Potch Wheeler and your lift station bill.)
