A self-serving diatribe by Mike Yoder, Commissioner of Elkhart County. He’s right. St. Joseph County is wrong, says he.
The Elkhart County commissioners decided to stay with the family. The St. Joe commissioners decided to file a petition of divorce.
Here is one of the fundamental problems. Yoder has an overly technical view of what the status quo was before Governor Daniels went mucking about with Indiana’s time. As a practical matter, we were on Central Daylight Time for 7 months out of the year and Eastern Standard Time for 5 months out of the year. By insisting on Daylight Saving Time and by failing to weigh in on a state wide time zone solution in a timely fashion, Governor Daniels forced counties to choose one or the other. St. Joseph County has opted to keep the 7 months the same and shift to Central Standard Time for the remaining 5 months. By contrast, Elkhart has opted to keep the 5 months the same and shift to Eastern Daylight Time for the remaining 7 months of the year. Because of Governor Daniels, the status quo is not an option. Forced to choose, St. Joseph opted for the solution that was closest to the status quo. Elkhart opted for the greater change. So Mike Yoder is just wrong if he thinks Elkhart stayed while St. Joseph left. If anything, it was the other way around.
Although, just sticking with Commissioner Yoder’s broken family metaphor for awhile, it looks like LaPorte County is the home-wrecking other woman.
