IU’s Coach Sampson appears to be in hot water for recruiting violations once again. Apparently it has to do with telephone calls to recruits – the same type of thing that got him in trouble in Oklahoma. All I know is that he’d better be a hell of a coach to be worth this much trouble. I shrugged off the Oklahoma violations because they didn’t seem that egregious to me and could have been a more or less honest mistake. This latest batch makes him look either disrespectful or stupid. If you got in serious trouble for recruiting calls and are on probation for those offenses, seems to me that you steer well clear of any potential problems. Even if he has an argument for this latest round of calls being technically in compliance, the thing is that you shouldn’t even risk getting close when you come to a new school, my school, with a cloud hanging over your head, promising to be good.

I was already bitter at the fact that they have more than doubled the price of student tickets since I got here — I couldn’t afford the $300 price tag this year — but this only adds fuel to my fires of discontent. It looks to be such a promising year, too. To have it start out tainted doesn’t exactly bode well for anyone, I would think.

Doug, while in the car this morning I heard this on the news and had the very same exact response…i.e. “damnit”!! probably with the same voice inflection you expressed..that kind of a “what in the hell were you thinking?” voice and “what in the hell were WE thinking” voice. I realize everyone has their own baggage, but lying is cheating and I’d take Bobby Knights temper over Sampsons dishonesty anyday.

Doug, you could always adopt the school in your current hometown …. :)

Doug,
We made it through the end of Bobby Knight. Somehow we will weather this one, too.

I think AD Greenspan is a bleeping idiot & has to go. He obviously does/did not understand that the IU tradition is not just about winning, but winning fair & square with true student-athletes. This will just give me another reason to focus more again this year on my Butler Bulldogs than IU…
Doug says
Tim, I think that’s exactly how the voice in my head sounded when I read this.
Joe, if I start rooting for the Boilermakers, particularly during basketball season, my wife and my parents would all probably disown me.

To me (non-basketball fan), IU seemed to make the decision to go away from honesty and more to the New England Football way when they hired this guy. Looks like I wasn’t too far off.
