The Evansville Courier Press has an editorial concerning the abomination that is class basketball and the role of government in high school sports. While I agree that in a perfect world, state government would not get more entwined in governing high school sports, the fact remains that class basketball is an abomination, one of the Seven Signs of the Apocalypse, and Hateful in the Eyes of God. While it persists, Indiana will be forever cursed and doomed with all Hoosiers bearing the mark of Cain upon their brow.
Now, if the IHSAA could just be persuaded to reinstate the one-class basketball system, beg our forgiveness, and spend the next 91 years (7 years for each of the 13 class basketball years) wearing hair-shirts under their clothes and a scarlet “CB” over them, then I would certainly agree that state government need not take action.

Whether class sports is a good idea or a very bad one—-it is not a subject that should be taken up by the state government—governor or legislature. Every time there is an itch somewhere someone wants to run to the government for intervention. The people making the decisions in IHSAA are the people closest to the outcome of the decisions–high school principals. These people are the ones in daily contact with the coaches, students, and parents of their community. Leave it alone and stop the day dreaming of another Milan coming along–and this is even more apparent when talking football.

Class basketball is a very bad idea. ‘Nuff said. (Not that I’m really advocating government intervention as the solution.)

Until you take away the incentive for the people in charge of voting, they will continue to support “class” basketball.
The incentives for the athletic directors and coaches are plums on their résumés, trophies in their schools’ cases, and more bragging rights all around.
They can justify it by claiming that the student-athletes gain clout in their quest for free college, which in fact, might be true enough.

Someday I will run for Governor of Indiana on only two issues: ending Daylight Savings Time, and ending class basketball. And I will win.
Doug says
For sure, you’ll do better than the last challenger for Governor.

Isn’t class basketball mentioned in Revelation? Or was it Daniel?
Perhaps all us good, one-class basketball folks can be Raptured away from the farce that exists in the state;-)

I hate class basketball.
On the other hand, how cool was that game where Richmond beat Lincoln 136-28?

How cool was the 4-A match-up of South Bend Washington and South Bend Adams girls 92-10??
