The Fort Wayne Journal Gazette has a series entitled “Capital Changes” which takes a look at changing government under Governor Daniels. Today’s is entitled DNR chief slims budget, examines parks’ needs. Mainly it seems to be a fluff piece on new Dept. head Kyle Hupfer. Apparently he has youthful good looks. I had no idea. But, maybe more discerning readers will find more useful information. Niki Kelly and the Journal Gazette typically do very good work, so maybe the problem is with this reader and not with the author or the publication.
The article mentions that he cut 37 positions, apparently Human Resources, budget, and purchasing types. Hupfer will apparently be reviewing fees. He apparently stood up for his department in front of the legislature. He’s conducting hearings with respect to the canned deer hunting issue. (An aside, Indiana is lousy with deer. Maybe I misunderstand the concept of canned deer hunting — property owners stock the property with deer? — What self-respecting hunter would need assistance in bagging a deer in Indiana? Might as well just go hunt corn.) Hupfer is training some DNR employees to oversee Dept. of Correction inmate work crews, replacing the prison guards previous administrations had overseeing such crews. (My preference would be to keep prison guards overseeing inmates.)
