HB 1540, introduced by Rep. Nisly, seems to open up brave new markets for uninspected roadside van meat. It creates something called “a custom exempt slaughter establishment” (which somehow puts me in mind of Krusty Partially Gelatinated Non-Dairy Gum-Based Beverages). (Actually, I can’t see where it actually defines the term and a quick search of the Indiana Code didn’t turn up the phrase.) I’m not going to spend a lot of time researching this one, so take my review with a grain of salt. Anyway, it allows meat slaughtered at a “custom exempt slaughter establishment” to be sold at, among other places, “a roadside stand” without any kind of inspection. A roadside stand is anyplace where an individual farmer sells directly to customers.
It seems to be intended for small producers, purporting to impose limits of 20,000 poultry, 100 hogs, 50 cattle, and 500 sheep & goats.

I, for one, have ZERO issues with the option of lawfully putting my money directly into the pockets of conscientious hardworking farmers I personally know and trust rather than into the coffers of Perdue, Tyson and ADM. I’ve done it before and I’ll do it again.
Many years ago I was in the livestock business and we to sell to an outfit that did pretty much exactly what you describe.
And you’d be shocked at how much meat he sold.
And you’d be aghast at what the meat he sold looked like when it was still alive.
Did the animals go arf arf and meow! lol
Worse than that.
Far far worse.
I don’t want to know if it is that bad.
Actually a number of years ago I had a guy pull his van into my driveway selling meat. He put a tarp down on my driveway and was taking out cuts of meat from hamburger to various steaks out of a cooler and put them on the tarp, It was ninety degrees out and he got pissed when when I told him I was not interested and drove away in a huff!
