I had a post from 12 years ago where I commented:
I would agree that infrastructure seems to be a great place to direct the spending. My theory is that we either spend the money stabilizing things now or spend it later fighting a war if things stay bad for too long. Probably the stabilization effort has to be world wide.
If people are starving and some power hungry lunatic comes along on a white horse telling them that their problems are because of those guys over there; the starving folks will happily follow the lunatic to go fight those guys over there.
Turns out that “those guys over there” were liberals rather than foreigners and, rather than starving, it was more a combination of racism, economic uncertainty, and eroding social status. Still and all, infrastructure would have been a good place to spend money.

The Chinese already kicking our butts when it comes to infrastructure. What is mind boggling is Trump stated there would be a infrastructure. bill in all his rallies and it never came to pass.
Just about every Republican post I scan on Facebook states the evil liberals are going to destroy capitalism and our country and push us to communism or socialism. I had enough and posted a comment that the United States had the biggest and most expensive socialistic economy in the world. Social Security, Welfare, Medicaid Medicare and so many other government payouts. Then I stated capitalism and socialism co-exist side by side. Wow I never seen a comment section die out so quickly.
The sad part is so many people no longer read or listen to what the left, center and the middle writers and news media have to say. They tend to only listen to read the side they have chosen. The humorous thing is the NY Times and the Washington Post have many right wing columnist. You will never see or hear them on Fox or the right wing radio. I think they occasionally show up on CNN or MSNBC. Pence had a radio show and I listened to it occasionally and he brought on homosexuals, libertarians ,right and left wing politicians and authors. He was polite and courteous and looked at both sides of the issues. I have no clue what happened to him?
I was lucky I grew up reading Time (left), Newsweek (right), Readers Digest (middle, right and some left), Mad Magazine, Sunday Chicago Tribune (Left) , Indianapolis Star (Right), Anderson Herald and the Elwood Call Leader. Throw in the Sporting News, Sports, Sports Illustrated (Left and Right), Golf Digest, Golf Magazine, National Geographic, SciFi, Biography’s . When I was older it was Cincinnati Enquirer and Post, Indianapolis News, National Lampoon, Playboy, Nuvo and numerous small papers like Nuvo that have gone under. We never had a lot of toys but my parents made up by exposing us to every form of the printed word, music, musicals, nature, plays, art, movies and sports.
I guess that makes me a card carrying liberal. Except that’s not true I was a Republican until I started reading autobiography’s of various authors. Lee Iacocca’s book was a eye opener on how the car industry declined. Everybody likes to blame the unions, but the Federal Government and management of the car companies were equally to blame
Fun fact: Iacocca had a deal set up for Ford to buy Honda Auto. Apparently Mr. Honda was more into the small engines and motorcycles. Ford Jr was in love with European cars so he nixed the deal. Hmm I wonder how that would have changed the world if Ford had bought Honda.
Hunter S. Thompson’s became famous with Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas and in my opinion his best book is Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail ’72. A big part (did not read the two books till the 80’s )was why I started to turn to left. The book opened the curtain of what happens behinds the scenes of two totally different political campaigns. The Republican’s all seemed way to stiff and pressed for my taste. The parts I enjoyed was the conversations between the reporters and the staffers running the Nixon and McGovern campaigns. .
This has nothing to do with politics but I love this story. The sports writers would be sent to cover the two weeks before the Super Bowl The sports journalist would drop their copy of their story’s of the Super Bowl in the rest room outside the bar, Then they would go in and find a story from a newspaper at least a few hundred miles away from their city that they wrote for. They would plagiarize the story making small changes so they had more time to kick back and drink. or play golf. I think Thompson put it,,” You didn’t have to go interview every players or coach and get the same story over and over and you know how I love to drink!..”.

Yes it was you who mentioned the book on Sir Francis Drake.
My memory about some things is uncanny.
