The Indy Star is carrying an AP article entitled “Knox County reconsiders Eastern Time.” The article says that Knox County commissioners are considering whether to ask for a reversal of the county’s time zone switch. An area resident apparently provided the commissioners with a petition with 2,400 signatures requesting the switch from Central to Eastern. It also mentioned that one of the commissioners asserted that other counties might ask the federal government to switch along with them. The article does not indicate whether this is a solid possibility or merely wishful thinking on the part of Knox County to get themselves away from the time line and put it in someone else’s back yard. There is a bit more information in this article in the Vincennes Sun-Commercial, but no reporting on what neighboring Daviess, Martin, Dubois, Pike, and Perry counties actually think.
Just a reminder, the current map:

The ‘plan’ seems to be to have Daviess,Knox,Martin,Dubois and Pike Counties re-petition together for ET.( Perry residents must be happy) Short of that, CT would probably stay the default time. They want to have a unified petition by May 15th. But reading the write-ups in local papers, one gets the impression nobody is in charge, or wants to be in charge. They can’t decide where to meet and when.It was funny ( to me) that one complaint is school kids will be arriving home after dark in winter because of early sunsets on CT!I thought late sunrises was the big problem? Probably both are,but there is no solution that time zone can fix.
Paul says
If only the DOT would cooperate and put them back on Eastern for this winter and Central for next summer, and back to Eastern for the following winter, and then back to Central for summer after that. Maybe they can work it so that they never have to touch their clocks.
Doug says
Wait, that sounds familiar.

I like it that Knox County is an hour behind. I am no longer late for dinner when I visit my family there.

Look at the map and see how balanced Indiana looks with a red CT square in the SW corner and another in the NW corner. This was NO accident!
Branden Robinson says
Lou,
A “red square”, eh? I think you’ve just found the killer argument for going back to standard time statewide.
To do otherwise smacks of COMMUNISM!
Lou says
Branden,
Not to get political, but Red China is one of our preferred trading partners,so maybe communism is no longer evil as long as it is supported by a capitalistic economy!

as a local physician I continue to support the central time zone for Knox County. As a member of the largest medical group in Vincennes,I have several patients who travel from Illinois and need less confusion in addition to the extra time to travel. I also can see how the same situation benefits
local businesses. I have heard others complain about time differences
among a small number of employees at the Crane factory without any
concern about the greater number at Toyota. Also, we are more likely to
see future Toyota “spin off” businesses locate in Vincennes when we are
on the same time. I hope we continue with the plan we chose with careful consideration and not cater to a few disgruntled individuals. Thank you for your attention. With kindest regards, Dr. Donald Fleming, Medical Center of Vincennes, Oncologist/ Hematologist —–

I just think its amazing that Knox County is even considering re-petitioning for ET.No one would ever have guessed that.
Lou says
Commissioners in knox County are still ‘deciding’ whether to petition for return to ET. Im no expert on these matters but I’ve followed the scenario of other counties and it looks like Knox County may decide to wait due to lack of direction, and that means Daviess and Martin Counties will also have to wait. General Election coming up in November means be cautious.

I can’t believe they are really doing this. Any fool can see that Evansville is closer to these counties than Indy is. What is the deal here? It screams of hidden agenda(like that of Gov. Daniels and Pres. Bush.
