Rick Kupchella, a reporter with KARE has an interesting blog entry from the protests at the Republican Convention in St. Paul. (h/t Brenda). The gist:
#Rage Against the Machine wasn’t allowed to perform, and that made some people grumpy.
#Most of the protesters were peaceful and simply looking to make political statements at a time and place where people were focused on politics.
#There were some hooligans in the crowd looking to make trouble, and that contributed to chaos and scariness.
#By and large, the police acted with courage and restraint, though there were some cases where they got out of hand.

Why do liberals always have to result to violence to get there point across? And then when things get out of hand they blame the police. There was a bunch of anti war marchers that went through Wi and they were arrested in Sparta after trespassing at a military base. Isn’t that what are political process is for? Can’t they follow the system?
Doug says
Yes, yes “liberals” “always” resort to violence and (by extension) “never” follow the political process. What a ridiculous statement.
Gullible One says
Your article confirms it.

When’s the last time you saw a couple thousand republicans or conservatives breaking windows, jumping on police cars and wreaking havoc in general?
Amy says
Spandex King! You are everywhere! Why don’t you ever link your blog here – you do over at Susan’s place?
Doug says
November 19, 2000 comes to mind.

Please….no arrests…no injuries…no police..that was no riot…..

Conservatives never resort to violence?
More accurate would be that conservatives never resort to peace. The war mongering of the US right-wing is shameful, and far from bringing us safety it puts a big target mark on America.
We need to start re-building America and quit bombing Asia.
Brenda says
Hmm… why do I suspect the violence came more from the disappointed rap metal fans rather than from the school teachers… must be showing my age.
T says
Tim–
There should have been police there, and arrests. The lack of them does not mean it wasn’t a riot.
T says
Off topic. But in light of how asking any questions about Ms. Palin is automatically sexist, I give you Indiana delegation campaign wear.
Gullible One says
Looks like ya lost this one Dougie. lol
Oh Amy, your so clever. How did you ever know that it was me?
Doug says
Lost this one? What is this to you, a damn football game?
Brenda says
Oh T, it’s an honest toss-up which of those buttons I find more appalling. A real sign of how far we have *not* come.
Jeff says
Getting back to the subject, there are lots of Republican instances of breaking things and violence. It’s just that the Republicans are usually wearing jackets that say “Police” on them, carrying batons and shields, and their rioting is “sanctioned” violence.
Jason says
***In my best Gene Wilder voice***
“You get NOTHING! You LOSE! Good DAY, sir!”
In all seriousness, both sides have elements that use violence.
It seems liberals will perform the violence themselves, in riots and, my favorite, the feces-bucket style protests.
Conservatives perform their violence by proxy, being ready to send our troops to fight and “win”. See Roger Waters
I don’t find one much better than the other, and in both cases, it seems it is a small group of the larger one that gets into these.
Doug says
Gene Wilder quotes are always appropriate.
