When I think of progress in race relations in the United States, I think of Abraham Lincoln and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Both were murdered for their trouble. I’ve heard Slavery called America’s Original Sin and Abraham Lincoln its Christ-figure. But, Lincoln was no son of God, so I guess it took Dr. King’s death and might well take a few others before we’re rid of the taint. There always seems to be a Bull Connor or George Wallace available for the part of the Enemy and the odd John Wilkes Booth or James Earl Ray available as trigger-men.

I think MLK Day has officially jumped the shark. Our local Hyundai dealer had a MLK Day ad with MLK driving an Excel.
I guess you could say, why should MLK day be different than President’s day, or any other over-retailed holiday we have out there. But if it is just another day off… do we really need it?

Wow, just had to go there with that last line, huh, Buzz? As though every other holiday isn’t just another day off for hypocrites; as though every single day of the year isn’t an excuse for shoddy public behavior by carnival touts.
And here I was gonna agree with you that anything good and decent which can be sullied by the merest touch of the incontinent self-aggrandizers of the Free Market will be.

Just being practical. We all had a lot of days off in November and December, this one seems like a waste to me. Like my kids need another day off.
