Meteor Blades gives us some numbers on the national debt by President:
Before Carter: $660 billion.
Added during Carter’s four years: $337 billion.
Added during Ronald Reagan’s eight years: $1.6 trillion.
Added during George H. W. Bush’s four years: $1.6 trillion.
Added during Bill Clinton’s eight years: $1.5 trillion.
Added during George W. Bush’s seven years, nine months: $4.5 trillion.
So,
Carter added about $84.25 billion per year.
Reagan added about $200 billion per year.
Bush I added about $400 billion per year.
Clinton added about $187.5 billion per year.
Bush II added about $580.64 billion per year.
Again, this casts doubt on the notion that the GOP is the party of fiscal responsibility.

Im still confused as to how there ever was a perception of Republicans as the “party of fiscal responsibility.”
I think the Rs are starting to come to grips with the fact that anyone under the age of 35 finds such a claim absurd on its face. Theres a real generational gap going on in this election that is greater than race or economic status.
It goes with calling themselves “the party of Lincoln.”
Its amazing how much some people will tweak their CV/Resume just to get a job.

neither is the party of FR…that’s the Libertarians!
there are a few FR-able members in the GOP (two dozen), but that’s about it…
did MB take inflation into account? if not, Carter’s numbers look better than they should…

It’s every bit as instructive to look at who dominated the Congress in the same years. They do write the laws, after all.
Ron says
Both parties spend much more that they should !
Democrats have been buying votes from the poor for years through a myriad of Government giveaways. Clinton’s numbers don’t look too bad, except that his destruction of the protective walls between banks, investment firms and insurance companies in 1999 has resulted in our failed economy today !
