Long time Neil Young fan. In fact I thought up llamajockey from the Neil Young song Ride My Llama. An obsurdist name because you can not actually ride a llama.
Lyrics:
Remember the Alamo
When help was on the way
It’s better here and now,
I feel that good today.
I’d like to take a walk
But not around the block
I really got some news
I met a man from Mars.
He picked up all my guitars
And played me traveling songs.
And when we got on ship
He brought out
something for the trip
And said, It’s old but it’s good
Like any other primitive would.
I’m gonna ride my llama
From Peru to Texarkana
I wanna ride him good
In my old neighborhood
I’m gonna ride him good
In my old neighborhood.
And when we got on ship
He brought out
something for the trip
And said, It’s old but it’s good
Like any other primitive would.

Wouldn’t it be something if 3 or 4 of the top forty singles in the country this summer where Anti-Bush or progressive protest songs. Neil’s album sounds great, but check out the awesome new Dixie Chicks record, Pink’s single Dear Mr. President and Bruce Springsteen singing Pete Seeger album as well. Green Day is due for another record pretty soon as well.

Longtime Neil fan. I gave the album a listen and thought “Same four cords, same drums, etc.” But I ended up having “Living With War” going thru my head all day. Good, strong Neil album. The overt politics might be a challenge to some of his fans I’ve seen at Crazy Horse shows, but that’s probably a good thing. I’ll be buying it when it’s released. This was the album I was hoping he’d make, especially after the crappy “Let’s Roll”.

I’ve always felt myself in a weird position about Neil Young; I like his politics but don’t care for most of his music.
Actually, maybe it’s Neil Young as a performer that doesn’t quite work for me, as I really like some of his songs when they get covered by others, such as Type O Negative’s “Cinnamon Girl”. Also, when Sammy was in the band, Van Halen did a rendition of “Rockin’ in the Free World” that kicked some serious ass. Sadly, I don’t think there was ever an official release of it. But EVH sure knew what to do with that nice, simple, heavy E minor riff.
Still, I don’t want to alienate the Neil Young fans here. I can’t really cast a stone at the man–one of my favorite bands is Neil’s fellow Canadians Rush. And if there’s anybody whose voice gets complained about more than Neil Young’s, it’s Geddy Lee. :)
Anyway, regarding what T.B. says, artists should challenge their fans. If you’re not telling anyone anything new, what you’ve got is not art — it’s just product. So hats off to Neil Young for expecting his fans to accept him on his own terms.
