I am in Day 2 of my continuing legal education seminar. I have my iPhone but no laptop, so blogging is tough. Twitter and Facebook seem to be getting a lot of my attention – even with the gripping federal tax update going on now. Word of warning on that, though. The federal estate tax lapses for a year next year. So, watch your back if you have any greedy heirs.

So Purdue (Lafayette) put in a bunch of new crosswalks with signage that says “State Law – Yield to pedestrians within crosswalks” (the pedestrian is a graphic) but… it isn’t State Law (or Indiana Motor Code)… at least, not that I can find. Nothing about stopping when the crosswalk isn’t otherwise controlled by a traffic signal. This has always been an issue on the Monon Train here in Indy – with motor vehicles not stopping.
The Indiana Driver’s Manual does say (under Pedestrian Safety) “• Always yield the right-of-way to pedestrians.” but…
Anyone?

Trail… Monon *Trail*

Brenda,
I’m not sure if these help or not, and I imagine you’ve already found them, anyway. But in case you haven’t…

Shelly,
Yes, I had previously combed through those. The first, for peds, says where you can walk and not walt but doesn’t say that you have the right-of-way. The second, for motorists, only covers crosswalks where there are traffic signals. There is a “part” missing in my way of thinking and I’m curious what “law” Purdue/Lafayette are referring to.

Pardon me… Purdue/*West* Lafayette… really, I *do* know better.
By the way, here is a news article with a photo showing the signage.
