There are a few things in the newspapers this morning on the Presidential campaign. A pro-Clinton group will run negative ads about Obama on the economy. Obama has been able to raise more money from small donors, so he’s still apparently flush with cash. Clinton has tapped out her big donors and seems to be having money troubles. So an outside “527” group will be running the hit piece on her behalf. It says that Obama lacks specifics on the economy. For those who are interested in actually reading, there are plenty of policy details available at Obama’s website. (Drill down to the PDF documents if you want more detail.)
Tom Davies, writing for the Associated Press, suggests that the Democratic nominees are courting “Republican Strongholds”. Basically, they’re campaigning in Hamilton and Elkhart Counties. This is just good campaigning — first, the overall state is going to be tight, so you want to scare up as many votes as you can; second, I believe some of the delegates are awarded based on performance in a particular Congressional District, so you aren’t maximizing your potential delegates if you just turn out huge numbers in the 1st and 7th Congressional Districts.
Lesley Stedman Weidenbener reports that Sen. Clinton will be campaigning in Jeffersonville and Terre Haute on Thursday. Today, she’s in Hobart and Princeton; tomorrow she’s in Lafayette and Kokomo. Obama will be at Assembly Hall in Bloomington on Thursday.
If I’m parsing this article by Rick Yencer of the Muncie Star-Press correctly, 11 of the 19 Democratic party chairmen in Indiana’s 6th Congressional District (Mike Pence’s District) are supporting Hillary Clinton according to one guy.
Sophia Voravong has the details of Hillary Clinton’s visit to Lafayette. Apparently she will speak at Riehle Plaza at about 5:30 p.m. this afternoon. My office is right next to the plaza and traffic around the area affects my ability to get in and out. So, perhaps I’ll be able to belly-ache about a Presidential candidate affecting my comings and goings. And tonight’s the county bar association’s Law Day Dinner. See, more belly-aching. It’s all about me.

By the way, Doug, Caroline Kennedy will be in town on Wed as well– early afternoon at the Tippecanoe County Public Library. The campaign originally had signed a contract to use the depot — but the mayor had that rescinded from what I can find out– so that his gal Hillary could take that spot.
Politics played hardball locally.

Up here the paper was belly-aching that we haven’t seen enough of Barack in Lake county. They feel like he’s acting like he has Lake county all tied up.
Doug says
Nobody likes to be taken for granted, but I suspect he does have Lake County tied up — though, to the extent he has time available, it probably wouldn’t hurt to get folks up there really excited about his campaign.

Columbus has a real good Obama campaign. I see signs, events, things in the newspaper, etc. I don’t see anything like that for Clinton.

My wife and I fell victim to the media blitz last night about Rev. Wright. The short of it is that althought this clown said a bunch of stupid stuff, the part that got us was him saying basically Obama is a fraud, or rather that he’s a politician and they say “what they have to”. I would have liked to see Obama get pissed about that, and tell people that Rev. Wright obviously doesn’t get it, doesn’t understand the campaign, is bitter, or whatever. Instead, we just got the “he doesn’t speak for the campaign” response. It seemed a bit generic for the occasion of his former pastor calling him just a politician.
Sure Wright shouldn’t matter. So shouldn’t a lot of stuff. Wishing people cared about what they ought to is not a very smart way to conduct a campaign.
I say this as someone who continues to phonebank for the man. I would like to see him get angry and push back. Passivity in the face of attacks was not the Kerry campaign’s most endearing attribute.

So far, I’ve seen two Barack commercials on Comcast, and have recieved 2 Hillary hit piece mailers.
I think that Lake County is going to split along racial lines. Gary and a couple of other African American dominated towns will go to Barack. White, working class areas like Whiting will go to Hillary, as will Hispanic East Chicago, where she has campaigned heavily.
Can the massive number of Gary voters simply overwhelm the vote everywhere else in Lake County? That’s a question for the guys who have lived here longer than I have.
T says
I got the two Hillary mailers and no Barack mail. I really should watch local TV to see the commercials, since we finally matter for once. With satellite, I often forget the networks exist.
Rev. AJB says
Guess we had a Barack campaigner actually show up at our doorstep the other day. My oldest told him/her that Barack was getting his vote. Of course he’s only seven, so that vote will only get him so far.
Branden Robinson says
Well, Obama does have Lake County all sewn up–he’ll probably get all ten of the voters who successfully cast ballots in the face of “good faith challenges” by Republican “volunteers” wielding the voter ID law truncheon.
Welcome back, poll tax! With charter schools re-segregating education, we’re just about ready for separate drinking fountains again.
Branden Robinson says
D’oh! Doug, I hosed a closing “em” tag in my previous post.

Branden, how many people are you driving to the bureau to get their I.D.? I assume you’ll want to be out in front of this, judging by your overwhelming concern for the disenfranchised and your utter disdain for rules, regulations or common sense.
Please report back regularly and let us know how it’s going, I know you’ll help as many as possible!

Indiana’s 6th congressional district is right on the money with the majority supporting Clinton. Hillary is our only chance at beating McCain. The Obama’s are connected to the wrong groups, to controversial and inexperienced to have a chance against McCain. Hillary has been tried and tested over 35 years and can win the white house. Hoosiers unite and get to the polls and vote Hillary. We cannot risk our economy, a depression, a war in Iraq that is costing us billions we don’t have, jobs, homes and live. Vote Hillary
