I had to steal this one from bilerico because I liked it so much (and because Eisenhower is a distant relative of mine — great, great grandfather was the brother of Eisenhower’s great grandfather or something like that.)
Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired represents, in the final analysis, a theftt from those who hunger and are not fed, who are cold and are not clothed. This world in arms is not spending money alone. It is spending the sweat of its laborers, the genius of its scientists, the hopes of its children.
–Dwight D. Eisenhower

Unfortunately this quote can be used to virtually disarm a nation and leave it defenseless against its enemies……….

Obviously there is a balance to be struck. Given that we spend as much on our military as the rest of the world combined, perhaps we haven’t quite reached the optimal balance.

Thanks for the link, Doug; we appreciate it. It always reminds me of the little quip my mom likes so well: “It’ll be a great day when the schools have all the money they need and the military has to hold a bake sale to buy a new bomber.” So far, the military isn’t warming their ovens.

“It will be a great day when the military has all the public support they need to protect us, and the teachers’ unions have to hold a bake sale to buy a new politician.”
