SB 7, introduced by Sen. Tomes, requires a property insurer to give a premium discount for an owner occupied residence with a metal roof. “The amount of a discount . . . must reflect the cost savings the insurer expects to realize in insuring property that has a metal roof.”
I guess I don’t have any particular opposition to insurers giving discounts for metal roofs, but it’s one of those oddly specific pieces of legislation that makes me wonder what the back story might be. I suspect that there are lots of other potential structural variables that could reduce risk to a building; so why single out metal roofs for special treatment?

I considered getting one to replace the traditional one that was damaged recently. However, since the insurance company will just buy me a new one if this one is damaged again, it doesn’t make sense for me to spend the extra money.
I’d like if my insurance company was smart enough to understand that I’m reducing their risk if I get a metal roof, but I don’t think the state needs to pass a law for it. Sounds like something along the lines of “There outta be a law against being so stupid”.

Sounds to me more like someone in the metal roof industry is a constituent.

Bah! The future I was promised was all monolithic concrete domes and such. Take a direct hit from a hurricane or tornado and simply hose the thing off, or something.
Can a steel roof do that? I don’t think so.

What a wasted bill.
Next on the Tomes agenda: making sure that homeowners that live at elevated altitude pay less for flood insurance than those that live at or below sea level.

Not bad, Buzz, if one is trying to survive a hurricane. I saw something like this in Pensacola a few years back. It had survived where the traditional beach homes had been swept completely away.
Paul C. Please! Shush. You might be providing the creative force behind the next bill. lol
Buzzcut says
Well, obviously, monolithic concrete dome homes should get the lowest insurance rates, and maybe even pay no property taxes! Now THAT’S the bill we need. Alas, the wood products-industrial complex will never allow it to happen. BASTARDS!

I understand why many prefer metal roofs, but I’m just wondering why this bill would favor one type of roof over another. Does anyone have any more information about this?
