Senator Heinold (R-Kouts) has introduced Senate Bill 79 which would require the Governor to petition the United States Department of Transportation to locate all of Indiana in the Central Time Zone.
This is the provision that should have been included in last year’s SB 127 along with the Daylight Saving Time provision. Gov. Daniels, Rep. Torr, and their apologists can make excuses about how the USDOT and not the legislature has the power to alter time zones, but the fact is, only the General Assembly can petition the USDOT on behalf of the entire state. Absent a request on behalf of the entire state, we get the county-by-county nonsense. If we seriously want to end “time confusion” in the state, this is the way to do it.
