I don’t know if Senator Steele is really keen on solemnizing marriages himself or maybe having Governor Daniels perform a ceremony for someone he knows. But, in any case, with SB 8, Senator Steele is taking another crack at granting the authority to solemnize marriages to the governor, lieutenant governor, and members of the General Assembly.
He previously tried with SB 19-2007 and SB 10-2006. While I don’t understand Sen. Steele’s burning passion for the bill, I also don’t understand why there would be any particular opposition to the proposal. It’s not exactly an exclusive group. Currently marriages can be solemnized by members of the clergy, judges, mayors, city clerks, and clerks of courts.
