Huckabee scares me:
I have opponents in this race who do not want to change the Constitution. But I believe it’s a lot easier to change the Constitution than it would be to change the word of the living God. And that’s what we need to do is amend the Constitution so it’s in God’s standards rather than trying to change God’s standards so it lines up with some contemporary view of how we treat each other and how we treat the family.
This, my friends, is theocracy. The problem, of course, is that God never speaks for himself. There is always someone seeking to gain or maintain power over his fellow citizen volunteering to speak for God.
If there’s a God, he presumably has better things to do with a whole universe to run. Let’s just decide what’s best for ourselves based on our own criteria. If God disapproves, he can just come strike us down at a later date. On the other hand, maybe we’ll all be treated to an eternal reward because we showed some f*&kin’ initiative.
Hm... says
What was this in reference to, Doug? Or is that a generic reference to changing the Constitution to be his text of the Bible?
Still scares the crap out of me.. and I’ll be glad to see him get defeated in Nov. as the VP Cand. for McCain.
Doug says
The usual, I think. Gay marriage. Abortion.
Doesn’t matter. If that’s his justification for those two issues, there’s no logical restraint against, say, imposing the death penalty for people who work on the Sabbath. (Exodus 35:2)
In fact, I’d say there is better Biblical grounding for that than there is for laws based on the notion that human life begins when the sperm hits the egg. Homosexuality as an abomination is probably on equal Biblical footing with working on the sabbath being punishable by death.

Ironic isnt it?

No Doug, that part of the bible doesn’t count. Neither does John 13:34, based on the lack of love they show others that aren’t like themselves.
Doug says
Has anyone developed an abridged Bible that include only the parts that count?
lou says
The Bible is kind of like The Law. It’s all there somewhere available but you don’t know what you need til you have a specific agenda.
Hm... says
Yeah, Doug. Thomas Jefferson wrote a distilled version over 200 years ago, for which he earned the wrath of his contemporaries in the Church. But then the Neo-Con/ Rightwingnuts don’t want to acknowledge THAT part of the Founding Fathers, preferring to imply that every time the FF used “God” or “Creator” they meant exactly what evangelical Christians mean today. (Of course, those same Evangelicals can’t agree on what that is either, so why should WE be the only ones confused.)

Huckabye? Huckabee wants to have adulterers, homosexuals and rape victims stoned to death. He also wants to make alcohol and music videos illegal, and make women 2nd class citizens and to take all girls out of school.
Oops, my bad, that’s another ‘religion’.

Branden Robinson says
Lou,
Is that The Law by Frederic Bastiat? It would certainly explain the Biblical reverence with which the more sociopathic libertarians regard that work.
Mike Kole says
Come on, Branden. Give it a rest. At least make it germaine.
Branden Robinson says
Actually that was a sincere question. I don’t assume that everyone who’s familiar with Bastiat’s work is automatically a rock-ribbed right-libertarian.
Admittedly there was some snark after that. :)
Mike Kole says
Yeah. Some. :-D
