This is an odd one. Until I see confirmation of some sort, I’ll hold open the possibility that Sen. Lawson did not really send this e-mail to a Libertarian party member and that it’s a hoax of some sort.
But, the Libertarian Party of Indiana has posted what at least purports to be an e-mail from Sen. Lawson to an unnamed member of the Libertarian Party, described by LPIN (in the linked post anyway) only as “a leader.”
Apparently, Sen. Lawson takes issue with the Libertarians making any kind of vigorous advocacy in opposition to HJR 6, which, as you will recall, is the proposed constitutional amendment which would prohibit recognition of a legal status “substantially similar to that of marriage for unmarried individuals” and, additionally, limits the benefits of marriage to heterosexual couples.
Anyway, the state Libertarians oppose this amendment as an effort to insert discrimination into the Indiana Constitution.
So, Sen. Lawson has a different view of things than the Libertarians. Nothing to see there. The weirdness comes when she asks them, essentially, to shut up about it already. Here is the letter as posted by LPIN — the letter refers to posts on a Facebook page. (Not sure if it’s the Republican or Libertarian state Facebook page).
Dear ____,
It has been quite some time since we have last spoken. I appreciate your continued concern about LGBT rights here in Indiana. As you know, we have taken recent strides to assist the state in strengthening marriage. Our state boasts one of the highest rates of divorce in the nation and we are seeking to help reduce these issues through marriage counseling programs and by constitutionally changing the way that marriage works here in Indiana.
I have come to realize that you have helped drive the Libertarian Party of Indiana’s most recent views against HJR-6 and SJR-13. While you do understand that I appreciate and respect your views on this issue, I do request that you keep these posts to a minimum. The Republican Party of Indiana does not wish to cause issue with the Libertarian Party of Indiana in any way, but should these oppositions continue to occur, we may have to make some structural adjustments.
I do appreciate your views and think that you have done a magnificent job in articulating an adequate viewpoint on these issues. While they are viewed as the most basic civil rights issues of our day, it should also be noted that continual political polarization in Indiana and in the United States could result in serious consequence should we not provide support and coalition together for the greater good of all Hoosiers.
I will keep you informed of the bills that are passing through the Senate this year and will continue to have open dialogue. I do request that you cease postings in this issue and help them die slowly so that the State House will be able to see the true nature of the people of Indiana and not of politics as usual.
Sincerely,
Senator Connie Lawson
(Emphasis added). I wonder what the heck “structural adjustments” might be. Sounds ominous.
UpdateCapandWash is saying that the letter is forged.
Update #2 LPIN is standing by their post. They presented a printed copy of the letter to the State GOP last Friday to confirm or deny and did not receive a reply.
Update #3LPIN is now saying they are convinced that the e-mail was a fake. But, they detail their efforts to verify the authenticity of the e-mail prior to their press release. Sounds like the folks they tried to talk to at the state Republican Party and in Sen. Lawson’s office weren’t responsive.
Whoever wrote the e-mail, I will always thank them for bringing “structural adjustments” into my vocabulary.
Gary says
If it came from Lawson, what would it mean to make structural adjustments or not provide support and coalition together? Would it appear that the Republican and Libertarian have been working together? Or is it that Republicans claim to be Libertarians in an attempt to be more reasonable?
I keep wondering about the water that some Hoosiers drink. Also those that claim to be Hoosiers but were born and raised in other states.

Some of the syntax is so garbled, it reminds me of some of the greats like:
I am aware of all Internet traditions; and
All your base are belong to us.

Has anyone checked the veracity of the letter.
It sounds a bit bogus.
