Senator Lanane has introduced SB 515 which would permit a voter to register at the polls on election day. This won’t pass because, among other things, there are enough legislators who perceive an electoral advantage in putting bureaucratic hurdles between citizens and the ballot box.
Just thinking out loud, but I wonder if we should make sure a citizen can get registered to vote in no more time than it takes the citizen to get checked to purchase a firearm. Both are fundamental rights. The impact of a firearm getting into the wrong hands seems more dangerous than a vote getting into the wrong hands. (The margin of Bush’s victory in Florida and the resulting damage being the counter-example.)
