Just some randomness from my trip down to Indianapolis this morning. I took the kids down to drop them off at their grandma’s and then, on my way back, I grabbed a 6 mile run on the Monon Trail.
#Once again, the Monon is an excellent facility. People were out in full force, running, walking, biking, rollerblading, and just generally enjoying being outside. I hope Tippecanoe County’s trail system eventually grows into something comparable.
#The grifters and pan-handlers were also out in full force. I stopped a a gas station and was approached by a guy with a quick sort of patter that reminded me of about every guy who ever lied to me in court about why they didn’t have any money. When his quick talking got to the subject of money, I interrupted him by saying, “I’m not going to be helping you.” I thought of offering excuses, but then it occurred to me that I didn’t owe him an explanation.
#I have a serious love of Skyline Chili. After my run, I stopped and got a 3-way and a coney. About 1.5 hours later, I’m still happy about it.
#I have demented radio habits. Pretty much the entire way home, I listened to the American Family Radio Network to get my fill of right-wing conservative Christian crazy paranoia. A commercial urging parents to teach their kids to respect authority was followed by a talk show host distressed by a DHS report that suggests that right-wing militants might be characterized by a violent opposition to government authority. He suggested that the government ought to be less worried about political speech and more worried about Islamic speech.
Rev. AJB says
Where did you get Skyline? In Indy? Please tell me it is so!
Lou says
Limbaugh listeners are basically cultural separatists, imo, and divide the world into the good vs the evil people and once youre in one of these groupings you must stay for life.Rush makes every news event, he chooses to discuss, a lecture on why his avid listeners are always right, and we really don’t have to discuss it:just explain it.Any contrary point of view would be confusing and anger the listeners.
Any would-be journalist should listen to Rush.. He’s very good at what he does, and he has solidified many disaffected feelings for the rwer politicians, and has carried along a fair amount of independents before Obama came along.
I often listen to Rush when I drive, but never otherwise.
There’s something about Rush that he should be only on the car radio or in the barber shop while we oldtimers wait our turn in the chair and discuss what Rush is pontificating about: no middle ground allowed.
From polls I have seen maybe 30% of Americans are like this: hardcore cultural rwers. They’ve currently lost all their swing voters. So making RL the leader of the Republicans would seem good strategy , defining him as 30% of the country.
Add decolette blondes with bare knees and live news commentary and we have Fox News ..

It is so. I don’t know if there are other stores, but the one I go to is at 86th & Michigan, on the northeast corner.
John M says
There’s another Skyline on E. Washington Street just outside the I-465 loop.
arnie says
And another in Castleton on 82ND street across from the car wash. Yummy. And you can buy the spice mix for Skyline at Marsh. We have it at home all the time.
Mike Kole says
I so wish the Nickel Plate corridor were turned into a trail & greenway like the Monon. The current plan, sadly, seems to be this light rail nonsense. Certainly, we do not hear the clamoring of Carmelites for retrackage of the Monon so that they can have light rail. Well, then again, there is no clamoring for light rail in Fishers, either.
John M says
Indy has its problems, but we have made progress. When I moved to Indianapolis 10 years ago, I lived in Broad Ripple, right next to the trail. It was nice, and inspired me to ride a bike for the first time since my pre-license days, but the Monon spanned only between 96th Street and Fall Creek Parkway. It was possible to ride downtown via the Canal Towpath and the White River Trail, but that was the extent of the connectivity. Now, the Monon stretches from downtown Indianapolis the border of Carmel and Westifield (146th St, and it will go beyond by the end of the summer), the Fall Creek Trail goes from the Monon all the way to Skiles Test Park on the northeast side, and the new bike lanes stretch from IUPUI all the way east to Arlington. The Cultural Trail ultimately will finish the connections, and make the north side and much of the east side of Indy a bike-friendly city. Unfortunately, the west and south sides aren’t as well-served by these developments, but it is progress.
Rev. AJB says
So I can have Skyline whenever I have synod business in Inday-and not have to wait for an annual trip to Cincy-yay!!!!
T says
Down here, we have to drive to Louisville for Skyline. I keep hoping Evansville will get one eventually.
ceb says
We now have a wonderful Skyline in Richmond, In. Tommy loves to go there.
varangianguard says
Hmmpf. I’ve worked one block away from a Skyline Chili for four years, and have gone there – once. Absence must make the heart grow fonder after all.
Rev. AJB says
Maybe with the huge Greek population in NW Indiana and Chicagoland we’ll get some up here-the original family that staretd Skyline was Greek.
Where’s the one in Richmond, mom?
varangianguard says
Re: the Rev’s comment about Skyline being of Greek origin, I Googled Skyline and learned that it is a sauce, not a chili con carne. This explains it for my part, as I am much more into the Tex-Mex chili con carne, than Cincy-style.
Learn something every day around here. ;)

Rev. AJB says
Sometimes I don’t recognize my hometown anymore…but that’s not a bad thing…
varangianguard says
Just for you guys, I sittin’ here getting ready to chow down on a Five Way Chili and Cheese Coney. If only I could have brought a beer back too.
Doug says
You suck, and I hate you.
Parker says
Doug –
That’s what we come for – the wit reminiscent of the Algonquin round table…
[I know – I suck, and you hate me…]
varangianguard says
Wait, before I feel hurt, let me wipe some Chili sauce off my face. And, I forgot they steamed the Coney buns.
Mmmmmm. MMMMMMM. That was surely good stuff.
Now, you were saying?
Doug says
BLINDED. BY. CHILI. FUELED. JEALOUSY.
Seriously, though, when I lived down the street from the place, I liked it but didn’t go there especially often. Now my Skyline-inspired joy borders on the ridiculous.
varangianguard says
You should be ashamed of yourself.
You just enjoyed Skyline a few days ago.
What about poor T and RevAJB who have had to go without?
Narcissus. That’s you. lol
BAW says
I have to admit being a Skyline junkie also. There’s one about a mile from our office on Dutchman’s Lane, just off I-264 aka The Watterson Expressway or inner loop of Louisville. Our office made several Skyline runs during tax season.
Rev. AJB says
Just got done with a study on Revelation-and in my New Jerusalem there will be a Skyway right next door to a Pizza King;-)
Blessed are those who have no Skyway-for they will inherit the earth-right?!? Or is that the meek…can never keep those two straight!
Rev. AJB says
Okay my Richmond talk just came out-“just got done!” Make that “just finished.”
T says
I flew from Tell City to Richmond for Skyline once last summer. Visited with Tommy and Emma over a steaming four-way with onions, then flew right back home.
A Skyline craving and a Pizza King craving are very different, but they both can be pretty powerful.
varangianguard says
Okay, RevAJB is henceforth banned from Skyline, since he can’t even use its correct name. LOL
Mike Kole says
I lived near a Skyline in Cleveland, and remember when it opened shop. I went there with a couple of co-workers for lunch. Never went back. It was complete crap. Super low-grade meat, thin bland sauce, and who the hell spilled spaghetti in it? I can’t believe the adulation shown here. Has anybody in Indiana ever had real chili?
Mike Kole says
Ha! Now that memory trickles back, this very Skyline is the one Anthony Bourdain visited in his Cleveland episode. I couldn’t believe he liked the stuff. When I watched, I thought it had to be product placement.
varangianguard says
I always wondered why there was so much fuss about Coor’s beer (back before they distributed it east of the Mississippi). Weak and watery. But, what do I know?
White Castle. Same thing. What is all the fuss abiout?
Doug says
For what it’s worth, I always thought the Coors tasted a lot better on tap in and around the Golden/Denver area than otherwise. For those who like a substantial beer, it’s still not a great choice.
Rev. AJB says
I will not call Skyline Skyway….I will not call Skyline Skyway….I will not call…
Mike Kole-yes, I’ve had real chili all around the US-and do crave chili con carne.
Skyline cravings come from growing up near Cincy and having it be that one food item identified with the region.
Had a friend from Cleveland that I brought to Pizza King once…he didn’t understand why I was (and still am) so crazy about it…
There are plenty of regional foods I can’t stand…but to each their own!
varangianguard says
OK. All forgiven Rev. AJB. Doug will be eating a Skyline for you next time he’s in Indy. lol
ceb says
Rev.AJB usually wins the chilli contest at his church. Both of my sons can cook fantastic meals.
BAW says
I’m jealous of you folks in Central Indiana who can get an original Pizza King “Royal Feast”, there are some Pizza Kings in the Metro Louisville area across the Ohio River in New Albany and Jeffersonville. The Pizza King in Jeffersonville is about a 15 minute drive from my house, their “Supreme” pizza is close to the “Royal Feast” found in Central Indiana but not the same. When I was in Muncie last Christmas for a get together at my cousin Kevin’s we had a major chowfest on some “Royal Feasts” while watching the NFL playoffs (washed down with some good cold beer.) I got 6 frozen ones to bring back with me to Louisville, they were gone in about 2 weeks. I may be biased but there are no Pizzas anywhere that can match the Pizza Kings found in Central Indiana. Skyline Chili is along those parameters also.
