Ten great moments in Internet History.
1. 1969 – ARPANET is born.
2. 1978 – TCP/IP
3. June 23, 1983 – domain names.
4. December 25, 1990 – world wide web (web browser/web server)
5. March 15, 1993 – graphic browser (Mosaic).
6. 1990 – Search engines (Archie)
7. 1995 – 2001 Dot com boom.
8. 1998 – Blogs
9. 1996ish – Social media
10. 1995ish – E-commerce
(The “moments” get sort of vague after #6, in my opinion.)

How you can trust a list about the 10 greatest moments in interet history that doesn’t mention porn?(tic)
daron aldrich says
1998 – Google
Doug says
Actually, I think the list does mention the advent of adult materials somewhere. But, it probably gives pornography less credit for the success of the Internet than it deserves.
Peter says
That’s not a very good list; it looks like it was made by someone without a clear idea of the Internet’s development.
You would think that they would include the invention of e-mail, the first dial up BBS, early ISPs (like compuserve or GE), http://FTP…and probably many other things more important than, say, social networking sites.
Oh, and you need usenet, the first example of spam, and maybe the first advertisement.
Peter says
For some reason, wordpress is trying to parse f.t.p. as a link…
Doug says
Now that you mention it, it’s a pretty awful list. The source is some search engine optimization site’s blog; so I guess it’s not surprising.
Rev. AJB says
Although I look at the list and realize I was on the internet long before the world wide web. Kind of makes me feel old;-(
Doug says
I was active in the proto-Internet world of the BBSs. So active, in fact, that circa 1985, I got myself arrested and convicted of stealing phone calls (technically, “criminal conversion if committed by an adult” of the Saverline phone facilities).
In fact, my first memories of your brother “T” have to do with him taunting me at school about my arrest, preferring to call me “felon” instead of by my given name.
Buzzcut says
This is devolving into something not unlike an argument as to who is the better captain, Kirk or Picard.
Doug says
Better captain? Picard.
Manlier captain? Kirk.
Buzzcut says
Geek.
The best thing about the Internet has been broadband. It SUCKED before broadband.
“Back in MY DAY, we got a 56k modem AND WE LIKED IT”.
Jason says
Better tactician? Sisko.
Peter says
Better fencer? Sulu.
I used a lot of dialup BBSs back in the day, too.
And my 2400 baud modem was *awesome* because it refreshed the screen faster than you could read!
Doug says
I lost my computer privileges before I could upgrade from the 300 baud modem.
Chris Hedges says
I remember dialing into the internet via Delphi after it was the first commercially available internet service available to the masses after graduating from IU and losing access to the university’s computers. The system was just like the university’s VAX system in the way it looked and felt.
Delphi — being the first to make the internet available to the masses — should also be on the list.
Also, IRC — people were chatting with each other back way back when before it became widely available elsewhere.
Brenda says
Doug! You were such the little techno-felon… sooo cool.
Oh yeah, remembering when the 2400 baud modem was the tops and I thought I might start a BBS where you could dial in and get things like… local movie listings!
I could have sworn www was later than 1990, though. I was one of the first 50 to sign up with iQuest in Indianapolis (in 1992, I think).
Brenda says
I remember sitting on the city bus and overhearing someone talking about “the web” and thinking – “WOW! Pretty soon everyone will be talking about it!”
Brenda says
Sexier Captain: Kirk
Brenda says
Best Cape: Sulu
Rev. AJB says
I remember that well! We had lengthy conversations in our household about what we could not do on the computer;-) We messed around some with the dial up stuff in the mid-’80’s. I didn’t really get back to it again until around 1989 or so at IU. Boy was it a pain compaired to “surfing” today.
