Joshua Green has an interesting post-mortem in The Atlantic looking at what went wrong in the Clinton campaign. The major themes seem to be chronic in-fighting among the senior campaign staff, a tendency to put off tough decisions, and a tendency to burn through money.
I would have liked to see more about just where all their money went. Seems like they just about went broke coming in third place in Iowa, and then were fighting money problems for the rest of the campaign. Since Mark Penn is my preferred villain in this tale, I’ll just assume he was overpaid and took huge chunks of money for ineffective ad buys.
PTN says
Colin Powell to endorse Obama?Bill Kristol just stated on FOX NEWS while ago that sources are saying Powell will endorse Obama and possibly speak Wednesday at the DNC convention.Thought you folks would want to know about the rumor.
Doug says
I’ve heard that rumor is not true. After Powell’s performance at the U.N. to get us into war with Iraq, that’s just as well with me.
PTN says
Yeah,I heard CNN rebutt this later. Who knows. Can’t imagine why Kristol would be hearing it though.I don’t pretend to understand the Obama campaign but wouldn’t they welcome such a endorsement?I thought Powell was a popular figure for those middle of the road ,independent voters.I know the partisans on the right and left don’t like him but I thought the non-partisan types did.
Lou says
In my view, race was important when Powell was chosen by Bush because a couple competent black figures were needed in a high profile position in the Bush admistration, because that’s how conservatives ‘solve'(defuse) all racial issues.
Race is important to liberals only when there are disparities in opportunity,so then race has to be identified to count, and government intervention can procede.Doug pointed out that Powell lost his crebility to lead when he pushed for the Iraqi war by lying to the UN.But he probably didnt lose it for conservatives.
Powell probably is still seen as a racial strategy by many conservatives that Dems might use ,but for myself and for liberals he might as well be a white Bushite, just one of the gang.
Liberals and conservatives both do think racially, but they have different goals.
