Not sure if this has been in any papers or on any television news broadcasts, but it’s snowing kind of a lot out there — out there being Lafayette, Indiana in my case. I don’t know that I’ve ever before had a two shovel day before in my 7 years as a homeowner, but today was one of them. At about 7:30 this morning, I shoveled the snow from over night, and again at about 4:00 this afternoon I went out. There has been about a foot of accumulation, so I am going to guess that outing #1 had me moving about 5 inches of snow and about 7 inches during outing #2. I think my back is going to hurt in the morning.
Combining this snow with the accumulation from last week – about 3 inches or so, I think, my driveway has a feature I remember on occasion during winters growing up. At the corners of the driveway where the yard, the driveway, and the street meet, you get huge piles of snow. Since the snows have been relatively tame or at least not usually cumulative, I haven’t had piles of any significance. But, now I remember when I was little taking a shovel out and carving giant “thrones” of snow. (Basically, I cut a seat out of the pile). In retrospect, I think the ones I remember the most were when I was 6 or 7 during the blizzard of ’78. No thrones for my 3 year old son, but he likes playing king of the mountain. (Mom bundles him up to a fare thee well so he looks a little like the little brother in A Christmas Story so he doesn’t get too cold.)
So, anyway, lots of snow today. We had to close the office, and now I hear on the news that the police are asking folks not to drive until (I think they said) 6 p.m. tomorrow. Fortunately my business involves a lot of stuff that can be done at home with a phone, e-mail, and a Westlaw subscription.

I’m jealous. We just have rain down here on the Kentucky line, and have had about an inch this year total.

Seems like there is a real difference running along about I-70 or US 40 through Indiana. South of the line it’s much more likely to be rain than snow. I know that during my days at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio (about 30 miles south of I-70, I think) it seems like we got an awful lot of freezing crap from precipitation falling when it was about 32 degrees. The Cleveland kids would complain incessantly about the lack of good snow. The Cincinnati kids were used to it.

I live in Indy and have shoveled twice too. About 3″ less then you but I will have the same back in the morning.

Or, you can be in Columbus and get coated with ice! We’ve got around 3/4 inch of ice now. Lost power at work, genny kicked on and a power spike from it took out the cooling system. Wouldn’t be a problem this time of year except for our server room, that got to 88 degrees. Fun day at the office.
I’ll take the snow anyday!

Doug,
I am also jealous and a big time Winter weather snow lover but here in Martin county we have had two inches of rain.It just started snowing a hour ago. Were supposed to get a inch or two. We’ve had very little snow this year or last.Probably no more than 4 or 5 inches the past two years. Our last big snow was December 22, 2004 where I measured 18 inches here. That was the year it was bitter cold that week and then warmed up January and February of 2005 and we had record floods on the White river and all over the area.
Enjoy the snow.
I love cold and snow.NO ICE.I’ll take the rain over that anytime!!!

The news is reporting tonight that it’s like 16 inches now.. and drifting.. up to 5 feet, like in my front yard. I shoveled this AM, but won’t bother til tomorrow. Hopefully the winf will die down soon. Days out of school are just sucky for a teacher after a while.

Campus was an absolute blast yesterday, and when I say “blast” I mean “trainwreck.” I actually went to my 10:30 class because I was positive Purdue wouldn’t shut down, and sure enough, forty minutes into lecture …
