Rep. Eric Turner (R-Marion) and Eric Miller (R-Eric Miller) killed the Governor’s tax cap legislation in the House. HJR 1 would have amended the Indiana Constitution to permit the Governor’s plan of imposing disparate circuit breakers on property taxes – 1% for owner occupied residential; 2% for other residential; and 3% for other sorts of property. Rep. Turner filed an amendment that would’ve jammed the anti-gay marriage amendment into the property tax amendment.
Got that? Gay marriage and property taxes — go together like fish and bicycles.
Turner apparently refused to remove his amendment. And Turner isn’t just some rogue wingnut. House Minority Leader Brian Bosma apparently approved of trying to combine gay marriage and property taxes. Just ridiculous. Even though I don’t particularly like the idea of amending the Constitution based solely on the property tax calculations of the moment, I can’t fathom making such a fetish out of homosexuality that I’d deliberately spike rational tax legislation over it.
Advance Indiana has a good bit more.

Eric Miller (R-Eric Miller)
Priceless!
Seriously, has this been the most ineffectual GA session ever?
Joe says
There are times I wonder if the Indiana Statehouse restrooms are on the same list as the restrooms at the Minneapolis airport.
This is one of those times.
Branden Robinson says
Somebody needs to hook the Erics up to a penile plethysmograph and show them some gay porn. I think there’s something they’re trying to tell us.
Doug says
Hey now. Not *all* anti-gay Republicans are gay.
Jeff says
I’m trying, but I’m hard pressed to come up with one that isn’t likely to be.
Hm... says
OMG!
I am speaking as an Honorable Member of the Committee to Determine Who MAY Call Themselves Gay (or NOT). These people (Miller, Bosma,Turner, et.al.) will NOT pass muster at the next meeting. I am introducing a Constitutional Amendment to the Gay Agenda to require all fallen Republicans Who Wish To Claim Gayness to renounce their Party for at least 6 months before asking for Redemption and Inclusion in the Agenda-fold.
In addition, NO former Gay-bashing Politicians will be allowed to Change Their Status for the foreseeable future. We are just full up with these types. They’ll have to immediately Cease and Desist to live on the down-low or cruise for anonymous sex. If you plan on living in a closet, stay there. But don’t plan on having any of us visit ya.
MartyL says
Is the tax amendment actually dead (at least for this session), or is this just a bump in the road. I didn’t see an mainstream press on this.
Doug says
Probably just a bump in the road. A similar provision passed the Senate. But if the House Republicans insist on proposing this sort of silliness for the Senate version, who knows what will happen?
Joe says
Well, then “Rep. Miller” will stand up and tell Hoosiers we don’t have property tax relief because of gay marriage … which is another reason we should have a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage.
Which is funny, except for the number of places in Indiana where this sort of thing would be believed. It’s obviously enough places that give enough money for Rep. Miller to continue to be a pain in the rear.
And I’m willing to bet that Bauer blinks in the end, because he wants to keep his majority in the House more than anything, and he’s probably got a few members of his caucus who would face election issues if they were seen as supporting gay marriage.
We shall see.
