I haven’t eaten there in 15 years, but I am still happy to see that Welliver’s in Hagerstown, Indiana will remain open. Apparently rumors of its demise were circulating. The restaurant offers an epic smorgasbord, and every so often, my family would trek from Richmond to Hagerstown to feast. It was what I picked for my 16th birthday dinner (I got to drive there!) and where myself and some of my fraternity brothers went as sort of a Last Supper as we were graduating from Miami.
So, if you’re looking for a place to eat in east-central Indiana, give it a try.

Welliver’s is fantastic! So much good food- too much to have a little of each. You have to walk the buffet and formulate a plan so as to maximize the sampling. Glad to hear they’re sticking around!

My absolute favorite was the mashed potatoes. I really have to arrange to get back there sometime in the near future.

The mashed potatoes? ;-) I always thought they were a little too salty, but I get them anyway. I like the cinnamon bread, the smoked sausage and chicken livers (when fresh–not so hot when they’ve been on the buffet for a long time), the lettuce salad, fried chicken (another salty item), macaroni and cheese, and the green beans. I always feels as if I need to drink five cokes just to counter the salt content of the food!
Their desserts are not as good as they used to be, but who really needs dessert with the cinnamon bread and the buffet?
By the way, rumors of Welliver’s demise have been circulating on and off for the last few years. Honestly, I’m not sure what would happen to Hagerstown if Welliver’s closed. Welliver’s brings a lot of people into town who would otherwise have little reason to go there.

It’s cool that Welliver’s is still open. I have many memories of that place. I haven’t been to Welliver’s in probably 15-20 years, but remember what an awesome smorgasboard they had. I’m going to Muncie for Christmas, wish I had time to get to Hagerstown. (If I remember correctly there was a shop nearby that had great caramels as well.)

I believe “Abbott’s” is the name of the place with the caramels. Here is a link.
